Brisbane<\/a> has hit out at claims made by rising star Karl Oloapu that the NRL club broke a number of promises made to him.<\/p>\n

Wide World of Sports revealed on Tuesday<\/a> the teenage five-eighth is refusing to attend training sessions with the Broncos, and is trying to leave the club for an NRL rival or, failing that, a switch to rugby union or the Super League.<\/p>\n

The Australian Schoolboys captain told WWOS that when he signed a three-year contract with the club early this year he was promised a spot in the top-30 NRL squad, the chance to meet and speak to head coach Kevin Walters, and that he would be allowed to play his preferred position of five-eighth.<\/p>\n

\ufeffOloapu now claims the Broncos are denying him a spot in the NRL squad, he's been told he will have to play a different position and change his body shape, and he has not yet met with Walters.<\/p>\n

He requested a release, which was denied by Brisbane.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday afternoon the Broncos responded to those claims.<\/p>\n

"The facts are that Karl is a quality young man who has been in the Broncos Academy system since he was 13 years old and in January this year he willingly committed to a contract with our club for three years from 2023-2025," head of recruitment Simon Scanlan said.<\/p>\n

"Prior to signing that contract, we worked from late November 2021 with Karl, his family and his then-manager to reach an agreement on a contract extension.<\/p>\n

"The day before the final contract was signed in late January this year, Karl and his family chose to part ways with that manager.<\/p>\n

"It was not until June this year \u2013 shortly after Karl and his family engaged a new player manager \u2013 that we received a request for a substantial upgrade to his three-year contract which had not even begun.<\/p>\n

\"How<\/p>\n

"We denied that request but committed to reviewing it during the 2024 season. Subsequently, a player release was requested.<\/p>\n

"Both the NRL and RLPA have reviewed the situation at the request of the player agent and no wrongdoing by the club was found.<\/p>\n

"In recent months we have done our utmost to work with his new agent to reach a way forward but multiple attempts to meet with Karl have been rejected.<\/p>\n

"It is disappointing to learn that Karl feels the way he does, but the door is most certainly open at the Broncos for him to rejoin training with our NRL squad.<\/p>\n

"Karl would be welcomed with open arms and would be fully supported by all our staff."<\/p>\n
