Two words should be bringing nightmares to NRL bosses Peter V'landys<\/a> and Andrew Abdo<\/a> right about now – Super League.<\/p>\n

The simmering feud with the 17 clubs over funding has reached such a crisis point that some franchises are quietly plotting the feasibility of a breakaway competition.<\/p>\n

For league fans with long memories, the scenario has an all too familiar ring to it – that of Super League, the rebel competition that brought the game to its knees in the mid-1990s.<\/p>\n

Nearly half the clubs in the old ARL broke away from the establishment, setting up their own competition.<\/p>\n

New clubs were born, old clubs died, lifelong friendships ended and hundreds of thousands of fans walked away from the game, never returning.<\/p>\n

Back then the battle was largely over pay TV rights, with media moguls Rupert Murdoch (Foxtel) and Kerry Packer (Optus) desperate to control the televising of the game.<\/p>\n

Now the game is at a stalemate over finances, with clubs demanding a bigger slice of the pie as the NRL slowly works out how to organise the game's monetary structure over the next few years.<\/p>\n

The breakaway league is a long shot, a desperate measure by frustrated clubs who feel they are not being heard.<\/p>\n

But it was also a long shot back in 1997 – and we all know how the civil war that erupted then nearly destroyed the game.<\/p>\n
