Francesco Bagnaia finished ninth in the season-ending Valencia Grand Prix to become the first Italian MotoGP<\/a> champion since Valentino Rossi<\/a> in 2009.<\/p>\n

Spaniard Alex Rins won the race in Valencia, while Bagnaia's closest competitor, Fabio Quartararo, was fourth to finish 17 points behind in the standings after blowing a big lead from early in the season.<\/p>\n

The defending champion<\/a> was 91 points ahead after the first nine races but saw his lead erode away<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 25-year-old Bagnaia won seven races, including four in a row at one point.<\/p>\n

"World champion – it sounds good," Bagnaia said afterwards.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe hardest race of my life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was struggling. My aim was to be in the top five, but I started to struggle after a few laps, but the most important thing is that we won the championship. It\u2019s a really great day.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Ducati rider has not won a title since Casey Stoner in 2007. It's also been 50 years since an Italian rider won a MotoGP title with an Italian bike.<\/p>\n

In July, \ufeffBagnaia's future in MotoGP was up in the air after blowing three times over the legal blood alcohol limit<\/a> following a car crash in Ibiza.<\/p>\n

Rins\u2019 win at home came in his farewell from Suzuki – the Japanese constructor retracting their involvement in MotoGP.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Spaniard Augusto Fern\u00e1ndez claimed the Moto2 title.<\/p>\n
