Race officials later confirmed that the 24-year-old was OK.<\/p>\n<p><img data-video-id=\"6315078661112\" src=\"https:\/\/vms-network-images-prod.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com\/2022\/11\/464818\/tn-nyc.png\" alt=\"NYC marathon leader collapses\" data-vms-id=\"ref:cla634dls001j0jqkuqs6i280\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Brazilian ran the first half of the race in a blistering 1:01.22, which put him 2 minutes ahead of the course record pace. He had been leading by nearly 2 minutes for the first 24km before he started to slow down a bit.<\/p>\n<p>Do Nascimento went down right before heading back into Manhattan and was quickly attended to by medical professionals. A few kilometres earlier, he had taken a quick 20-second bathroom break and had also stopped to walk briefly for a few minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Chebet saw Do Nascimento on the ground and said he \u201cfelt bad for him, but had to continue to race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew that it was hot and humid and (Do Nascimento) was going at a high pace,\u201d Chebet said through a translator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has a lot of experience [but] he knew he was going to surpass him.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Chebet, 33, pulled away from the pack when chasing Do Nascimento as they headed over the bridge into Manhattan for the first time. After Do Nascimento&#x27;s collapse, Chebet took the lead and wasn&#x27;t threatened the rest of the way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CitiusMag\/status\/1589285348982788096?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"embed-social embed-twitter\" data-show-caption=\"false\" data-conversation=\"none\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/CitiusMag\/status\/1589285348982788096?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Chebet won the Boston Marathon earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoston was actually harder and it prepared him for the win for New York,&quot; the translator said for Chebet.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;He\u2019s very thankful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The victory continued a drought for American men in the race &#8211; no runner from the US has won since 2009. The Americans&#x27; top hope, Galen Rupp, was in the chase pack before withdrawing from the race right before the 30km mark.<\/p>\n<p>It was Lokedi&#x27;s first-ever marathon and she finished in 2:23.23 \u2014 just ahead of Lonah Chemtai Salpeter of Israel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just so happy that I just won, you know?!\u201d Lokedi said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really excited, just so happy that I did it here. The people out there, the course was amazing, the cheers, everything. I\u2019m just thankful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 28-year-old was in a tight race before she pulled ahead of Chemtai Salpeter in the final four kilometres to win by seven seconds and finish about 50 seconds off the course record.<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"9a31f96d-6af2-4f3b-b5d6-85f66806416a\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/9a31f96d-6af2-4f3b-b5d6-85f66806416a\" alt=\"Madison de Rozario (L) completes the New York City Marathon.\" data-width=\"7103\" data-height=\"3995\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#x27;t expect to win, I expected to run well,\u201d Lokedi said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a good outcome and I&#x27;m really excited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An hour earlier, both the men&#x27;s and women&#x27;s wheelchair races ended with course records being broken.<\/p>\n<p>Marcel Hug of Switzerland was victorious in the men\u2019s wheelchair race for the fifth time, tying Australian <a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/news\/kurt-fearnley-spine-tingling-don-acceptance-speech\/d7c18358-e6e8-4796-8dfe-8cb1c86a871a\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Kurt Fearnley\">Kurt Fearnley<\/a> for the most-ever victories in that event.<\/p>\n<p>Hug finished the course in 1:25.26 to break the previous mark of 1:29.22 set by Fearnley in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe conditions were great for us. A tailwind in the first half. It was very good conditions. I think that\u2019s the reason,\u201d Hug said of the record time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know the time. My goal was to go as fast as possible and not focus on the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Susannah Scaroni also broke the course record in the women&#x27;s wheelchair race, finishing in 1:42.43.
