A\ufeffndrew Thorburn looks poised to launch legal action against Essendon<\/a> for "wrongful termination" as the AFL club's CEO.<\/p>\n

That's despite the Bombers announcing Thorburn had chosen to resign, less than 24 hours after he had been announced as the club's new chief<\/a> in a bombshell last month.<\/p>\n

Thorburn's reign as Essendon boss sensationally ended a day after it began, when it was revealed he was chairman of a church which denounces homosexuality and likens abortion to concentration camps.<\/p>\n

Bombers chairman David Barham told media Thorburn chose to quit during a conversation about the revelations.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffIt's difficult because in interview processes you're not allowed to ask about people's religious (beliefs), it's against the law," Barham said last month.<\/p>\n

"What we did as soon as we saw them was we acted. This morning I saw him (Thorburn) first thing and we spent most of the day talking and he decided (resigning) was what he would do.<\/p>\n

"These comments were buried deep in \ufeffsermons from years ago, so they weren't as easily found.<\/p>\n

"At the end of the day, I reference-checked Andrew thoroughly. I rang five incredibly high-profile people who had worked with him and worked for him, and I had no reason to think anything other than he was a suitable candidate."\ufeff<\/p>\n

While Barham claimed Thorburn had voluntarily resigned, The Age and 3AW journalist Sam McClure now reports\ufeff Thorburn is launching legal action.<\/p>\n

"Andrew Thorburn is retaining legal counsel for wrongful termination by the Essendon Football Club," McClure tweeted on Thursday evening.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe Bombers have not yet replaced Thorburn and currently do not have an active CEO employed.<\/p>\n
