The Melbourne Cup<\/a> is known as 'the race that stops a nation' and on the first Tuesday in November millions of eyes around Australia will be keenly watching the events at Flemington<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Last year's winning jockey \ufeffJames McDonald – who steered Verry Elleegant to glory – will not contest this year's race after his runner Durston was scratched from the field on Friday.<\/p>\n

After getting a run as the emergency in the Caulfield Cup<\/a> before shocking the field to finish first, McDonald had hoped to take Durston first to the line on Cup day – becoming the first jockey since Glen Boss to win consecutive Melbourne Cups.<\/p>\n

But it wasn't meant to be.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Following four victories at Derby Day on Saturday\ufeff, McDonald spoke to Nine's Sport Sunday<\/em> about the soggy conditions forecast for Flemington on Tuesday and how the wet track will disadvantage some horses.<\/p>\n

"[The track]\ufeff raced beautifully, it was in great order. It was like a bowling green out there," he said.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffWe got a few showers during the day which was a little bit unfortunate but the track held up beautifully – it raced very fairly all day.<\/p>\n

"It's forecast for a bit of rain on Tuesday for Melbourne Cup day, which is pretty unfortunate as well as it will put a little bit of a dampener on the race itself as obviously horses that don't handle [wet conditions] are going to be disadvantaged.<\/p>\n

"Bu\ufefft overall it should be a really great day as Melbourne Cup day is always."<\/p>\n

WHAT TIME WILL THE CUP RUN<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The 2022 Melbourne Cup will be run on Tuesday, November 2 at 3pm (AEDT).<\/p>\n

In Queensland, daylight savings time doesn't apply, so the main race will run at 2pm (AEST). In Western Australia, the race will be at midday, 1.30pm in the Northern Territory, and 2.30pm in South Australia.<\/p>\n

The first race on Melbourne Cup Day is at 10.45am (AEDT) and the last race is at 5.15pm (AEDT).<\/p>\n

THE RACE ITSELF<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Race 7 is the Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse and it is run over 3200m.<\/p>\n

A total of 24 horses make up the field. There are a total of 10 races contested on Melbourne Cup day.<\/p>\n

The main race is usually completed in just over three minutes.<\/p>\n

PRIZEMONEY ON OFFER<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\ufeff<\/strong>The Melbourne Cup is the world's richest handicap race.<\/p>\n

This year the race is worth a total of $7.75 million, and the famous 18ct solid gold Hardy Brothers trophy is worth $250,000.<\/p>\n

The winner will receive $4.4 million, second place $1.1 million, third $550,000, fourth $350,000, fifth $230,000 and sixth to 12th $160,000.<\/p>\n

Jockeys receive around three per cent of the prizemoney and a miniature Melbourne Cup trophy worth $10,000.<\/p>\n

Trainers receive 10 per cent of the prizemoney and the connections collect the rest.<\/p>\n

WEATHER FORECAST FOR FLEMINGTON<\/strong><\/h2>\n

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Flemington can expect cloud cover and showers throughout Melbourne Cup day, with a top temperature of 14 degrees and the possibility of between 6-10mm of rainfall.<\/p>\n

A thunderstorm could also roll through to really rain on the punters' parade.<\/p>\n

Melbourne is also forecast to receive 1-3mm of rain on both the Sunday and Monday before the Melbourne Cup, potentially leaving the course damp for the big race.<\/p>\n

HOW IS THE MELBOURNE CUP FIELD DECIDED?\ufeff<\/h2>\n

Connections, referring to the owners and trainer of a racehorse, must nominate their horse for the Melbourne Cup. Selection is open to both local and international horses with no restrictions on sex.<\/p>\n

This year a total of 186 horses were initially nominated for the race.<\/p>\n

As soon as that list is completed, the handicappers will assess and assign each nominee a weight, based on their handicap rating and past performances at the time.<\/p>\n

There are two requirements that all racehorses must meet to participate in the process. This includes that a nominated horse must be at least three years old. While a horse's handicap-allocated weight must exceed 49kg, but be no more than 57kg.<\/p>\n

\"2022<\/p>\n

The handicappers will draw up an "order of entry" which ranks every horse from first to last based on how likely they are to make the final field. Generally, the horses at the top of the list will be assigned the heaviest weights.<\/p>\n

From the time it is created, the order of entry will then change when connections withdraw their horse from contention, or when a nominated horse moves up the list based on weight penalties or performance in exemption events.<\/p>\n

When the Melbourne Cup barrier draw happens on the Saturday before the race, the top 24 ranked horses on the order of entry will form the Cup field, and each will be assigned a barrier.<\/p>\n

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MELBOURNE CUP\ufeff<\/h2>\n

The inaugural Melbourne Cup, which was run in 1861, was won by Archer from a field of 16 horses. Since then, the race has grown so much that Melbourne Cup day is a public holiday for most of the state of Victoria.<\/p>\n

Makybe Diva is the only horse to have won the Cup three times, securing the win consecutively between 2003 and 2005, jockeyed by Glen Boss.<\/p>\n

The jockeys with the most victories are Harry White (1974, 1975, 1978, 1979) and Bobbie Lewis (1902, 1915, 1919, 1927).<\/p>\n

With 12 Melbourne Cup victories spanning over 43 years, Bart Cummings holds the record for the most victories as a trainer. His last triumph came in 2008.<\/p>\n

Verry Elleegant was the 2021 Melbourne Cup winner, becoming the first horse in history to win the race from barrier 18.<\/p>\n
