G\ufefflenn Maxwell<\/a> has been spotted doing wicketkeeping drills at practice, with Matthew Wade in doubt<\/a> for Australia's must-win T20 World Cup match against England at the MCG.<\/p>\n

Wade tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, and while the indications from the Australian camp are that he will still play on Friday night, the lack of a backup keeper in the 15-man squad poses a problem.<\/p>\n

Bringing in another specialist keeper, such as Alex Carey, would only be allowed if Wade was ruled out for the entire tournament. \ufeff<\/p>\n

Josh Inglis was named in the original squad, but a freak golf injury forced him out, with selectors adding all-rounder Cameron Green in his place.<\/p>\n

At the time, Australian coach Andrew McDonald conceded the selectors were taking a calculated risk by not having a backup for Wade in the squad.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, Australia is likely to give Wade until the last moment to prove his fitness. Spinner Adam Zampa missed Tuesday's match against Sri Lanka in Perth after he contracted COVID-19.<\/p>\n

Should Wade play, he'll be required to travel to the ground separately \ufeffto his teammates, and won't be able to use the Australian dressing room.<\/p>\n

Apart from Maxwell, whose off-spin is regularly used in T20 matches, both opening batters, Aaron Finch and David Warner, could take the gloves if a replacement is required.<\/p>\n

Finch has kept in the BBL, while Warner has been behind the stumps in a Test match.<\/p>\n

Having to hand the gloves to a stop-gap keeper in a World Cup campaign is nothing new. During the 1992 World Cup, also in Australia, David Boon kept against both South Africa and India after Ian Healy injured his hamstring.<\/p>\n

It's almost a sudden-death match for both Australia and England, given the loser will have just one win from three matches.<\/p>\n
