The immediate playing future of Tiger Woods<\/a> is up in the air, after confirmation the 45-year-old has had back surgery for the fifth time.<\/p>\n

According to a statement released by the 15-time major champion, he underwent a microdiscectomy to remove a pressurised disc fragment that was pinching a nerve.<\/p>\n

He began experiencing discomfort during the recent PNC Championship, where he played alongside his son, Charlie.<\/a><\/p>\n

Woods' doctors say the surgery was a success and he's expected to make a full recovery.<\/p>\n

"I look forward to beginning training and am focused on getting back out on Tour," Woods said.<\/p>\n

It means he will miss at least the Farmers Insurance Open, an event he's won a record seven times, and the Genesis Invitational, where he doubles as the tournament host.<\/p>\n

The first of this year's major championships, the Masters, is scheduled to begin on April 8. Woods has won that tournament five times, one short of Jack Nicklaus' all-time record, while he needs three major titles to equal Nicklaus' career record of 18.<\/p>\n

This is the fifth operation Woods has had on his back, but the first since he underwent spinal-fusion surgery in 2017. He had previously had a microdiscectomy on three separate occasions in 2014-15. He has also had five operations on his left knee.<\/p>\n

Woods struggled with his back through 2020, playing just nine events for the year and dropping to 44th in the world rankings. His best finish in the seven post-COVID events he played was 37th at the Memorial tournament in July, while he missed a number of tournaments he traditionally plays, such as the Arnold Palmer Invitational, which he's won eight times, and the prestigious Players Championship.<\/p>\n

Woods hasn't won on tour since late-2019, when he was victorious at the ZOZO Championship, his 82nd victory, tying the record set by Sam Snead.<\/p>\n

"My body just has moments where it just doesn't work like it used to," Woods said in November.<\/p>\n

"No matter how hard I try, things just don't work the way they used to, no matter how much I push and ask of this body, it just doesn't work at times."<\/p>\n
