Ravichandran Ashwin may have been on the firing end of a Tim Paine earful at the SCG, but the Indian spinner was the one who got the last laugh come the end of the series.<\/p>\n

The spinner was one of the heroes of India's SCG stand as he weathered a day five peppering at the crease from Australia's bowling cartel <\/a>to draw the match and push a decider in Brisbane.<\/p>\n

During Ashwin's stand Paine infamously blew his top as the pressure of the final day reached boiling point<\/a>, subjecting the Indian spinner to some harsh abuse.<\/p>\n

The wicketkeeper called him a "d—head" and said: "We can't wait to get you to the Gabba, Ash.<\/p>\n

\"Paine<\/p>\n

"At least my teammates like me, d—head. I've got a lot more Indian friends than you do. Even your teammates think you're a goose. Don't they. Every one."<\/p>\n

When Ashwin asked Paine to "tell me when you're done", the skipper replied: "I can talk all day mate. You wait until you get to the Gabba, pal."<\/p>\n

The suggestion from Paine was that Ashwin would cop some short deliveries on the bouncier Gabba surface than the one he faced in Sydney.<\/p>\n

However, as a tantalising rematch between the pair loomed, Ashwin was unfortunately pulled from the final test after succumbing to back issues. But that didn't stop the spinner from chirping up.<\/p>\n

As Rishabh Pant blasted a memorable 89 not-out to tear down Australia's target of 328 with a handful of balls remaining, Twitter was swarmed with adulation for the Indians.<\/p>\n

But Ashwin perhaps took the cake with his post.<\/p>\n

"Good evening from Gabba!! I am sorry I couldn't play here but thanks for hosting us and playing some hard cricket during these tough times. We will remember this series forever! @tdpaine36 @CricketAus," he tweeted.<\/p>\n

Ashwin had the gall to tag Australian captain Paine in his tweet.<\/p>\n

Even his wife joined in. "SEE YOU AT THE GABBA MATE," she tweeted.<\/p>\n

The sledge didn't go unnoticed, garnering a host of amusement from figures around the game.<\/p>\n

Replying to a video of the Australian leader sledging Ashwin in Sydney, Ashes-winning captain Michael Vaughan wrote: "Aged well" with a couple of cheeky emojis.<\/p>\n

Former England fast bowler Darren Gough tweeted: "Is it too early for #waittillwegetyoutobrisbane"?<\/p>\n

Sports journalist Daniel Gregory said "sensational from Ashwin" while English greats were also quick to poke fun at Paine.<\/p>\n

Channel 7 reporter Chris Garry tweeted "solid return serve from Ashwin!" while his colleague Andrew McCormack wrote: "Damn, Ashwin really went ahead and tagged Tim Paine."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
