PayPal said the company will no longer sponsor the Phoenix Suns<\/a> if owner Robert Sarver remains part of the franchise when his suspension ends.<\/p>\n

PayPal said its current partnership deal with the Suns ends after the coming 2022-23 season, meaning it will expire during Sarver\u2019s one-year suspension from the NBA. Sarver was suspended this week, plus fined $14 million<\/a>, after an investigation showed a pattern of lewd, misogynistic, and racist speech and conduct during his 18 years as owner of the Suns.<\/p>\n

In a statement, PayPal President and CEO Dan Schulman pointed to his company\u2019s \u201cstrong record of combatting racism, sexism and all forms of discrimination\u201d and said Sarver\u2019s conduct is \u201cunacceptable and in conflict with our values.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn light of the findings of the NBA\u2019s investigation, we will not renew our sponsorship should Robert Sarver remain involved with the Suns organisation, after serving his suspension,\u201d Schulman said.<\/p>\n

Schulman said PayPal will remain supportive of the team, its players \u201cand the experienced and diverse talent now leading the organisation,\u201d including coach Monty Williams, general manager James Jones, assistant general manager Morgan Cato and senior vice president of people and culture Kim Corbitt.<\/p>\n

Williams, Jones, Cato and Corbitt are African-American. The investigation into Sarver showed he \u201crepeated or purported to repeat the N-word on at least five occasions spanning his tenure with the Suns,\u201d though noted that the independent lawyers hired by the NBA to conduct the probe made \u201cno finding that Sarver used this racially insensitive language with the intent to demean or denigrate.\u201d<\/p>\n

PayPal\u2019s statement came one day after Suns vice chairman Jahm Najafi called for Sarver to resign, saying there should be \u201czero tolerance\u201d for lewd, misogynistic and racist conduct in any workplace. Some players, including Suns guard Chris Paul \u2014 a past president of the National Basketball Players Association \u2014 and Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, also have said the NBA's sanctions of Sarver did not go far enough.<\/p>\n

PayPal is based in San Jose, California. The technology platform and digital payments company also has been a partner for the WNBA\u2019s Phoenix Mercury and a Spanish soccer team, both owned by Sarver.<\/p>\n
