Cricket icon Ian Chappell says he can't fault how Australia's bowlers operated during India's epic seventh-wicket partnership on day three of The Gabba Test<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The former Australia captain<\/a> instead believes the hosts should simply "tip their hat to the Indians".<\/p>\n

When Australia snared their fifth wicket, that of India wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, the visitors still trailed the hosts' first-innings total by 183 runs.<\/p>\n

At that stage, therefore, Australia appeared highly likely to continue tearing through India's ravaged line-up en route to reclaiming the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.<\/p>\n

But two rookies – Test debutant Washington Sundar and second-gamer Shardul Thakur – ensured the script of the series again took a wild turn.<\/p>\n

Sundar and Thakur met in the middle at 6-186 and joined forces for India's third-highest seventh-wicket partnership in Australia ever, racking up 123 runs.<\/p>\n

The two rookies left deliveries like batsmen of a far-superior reputation, showcased impeccable defence and peeled off the occasional boundary on Australia's bounciest and quickest wicket against the best bowling attack in the world.<\/p>\n

Sundar was eventually dismissed for 62 and Thakur 67.<\/p>\n

Chappell says they deserve every praise.<\/p>\n

"They played pretty damn well. Both of them had a decent defence and a good shot range. When you read that Thakur has a first-class average of 16 – that's not what I saw today. He looks much better an average of 16," Chappell told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

"So I don't think you can fault the Aussie bowlers. They've just got to tip their hat to the Indians.<\/p>\n

"At the tail end I thought they probably bowled too short too often, but during the partnership between Sundar and Thakur I thought they bowled okay."<\/p>\n

The surprise 123-run partnership was another example of a depleted India wrestling their way out of a seemingly wretched situation.<\/p>\n

The Ravi Shastri-coached squad had already lost captain Virat Kohli, quicks Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah, spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin and batsman Hanuma Vihari before the Brisbane Test.<\/p>\n

The tourists then lost paceman Navdeep Saini on day one of The Gabba fixture, further depleting India's most inexperienced Test bowling attack since 1933.<\/p>\n

In positive news for India, Saini was today spotted bowling in the nets and is expected to be reinjected into the match on day four.<\/p>\n

India's resolve has left Chappell stunned.<\/p>\n

"This has side shown unbelievable resilience," Chappell said.<\/p>\n

"You can trace a bit of it back to the IPL, where they're playing against a lot of international players and a lot of very good international players on a regular basis. I think the intimidation factor that was there in the past isn't there any longer.<\/p>\n

"But you've just got to take your hat off to India. I thought after Sydney, and particularly when they had to make four changes, they had probably run their race now. They've used up all their energy, their emotion, all those sorts of things – and I thought they could really struggle in Brisbane. But no, the young guys have come out and done exactly the same. It's been amazing."<\/p>\n
