Alpine is set to make a call imminently on whether McLaren-bound Oscar Piastri<\/a> is kept onboard for the remainder of this year.<\/p>\n

On the eve of the Dutch Grand Prix, it was announced Alpine had lost its bid to keep Piastri on its books into next year<\/a> after the Contract Recognition Board ruled in favour of McLaren.<\/p>\n

Piastri will make his Formula 1<\/a> debut in 2023 alongside Lando Norris<\/a> as part of a two-year deal.<\/p>\n

With the young Australian destined to join the Woking outfit, Alpine is weighing up whether it bothers keeping Piastri for the rest of 2022.<\/p>\n

As it stands, the highly sought-after 21-year-old is still a reserve and test driver for the Enstone squad. However, he might not be for much longer.<\/p>\n

"He's with us this weekend, doing simulator work, and that will be decided on," Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer said of Piastri's place with the team.<\/p>\n

"He'll continue this weekend. There's only a couple of days left, today and tomorrow, and then on Monday we'll get together with them and decide how to go forward."<\/p>\n

In an interview with the official Formula 1 website, Piastri said he was happy to carry out his duties with Alpine until his contract end.<\/p>\n

Should Piastri vacate his position at Alpine, that could open the door for an early arrival to McLaren.<\/p>\n

Piastri is also a reserve driver for McLaren. Earlier this year he was put on standby after Lando Norris fell ill in the lead-up to the Monaco Grand Prix.<\/p>\n

That resource sharing agreement has remained intact since.<\/p>\n

Now, for McLaren, it's a case of figuring out what is possible pending the outcome of Monday's meeting.<\/p>\n

"That's ultimately up to Andreas [Siedl, McLaren team principal] to work through what our plans are for this year," McLaren CEO Zak Brown told Sky Sports F1 when asked if a free practice outing was a possibility for Piastri.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"He is under contract to Alpine for '22, so that's something the two of them are going to need to discuss, but we haven't finalised any plans on our end. We do have our TPC (testing of a previous cars) testing program going, so Andreas will make those decisions in due course."<\/p>\n

Ironically, that would place Piastri in either Norris' car or that of Daniel Ricciardo's, who the young gun will replace next year.<\/p>\n

Asked hypothetically what he would do, Brown said Alpine should not hold Piastri back from an early arrival to McLaren.<\/p>\n

"This is my own personal opinion, I think you've got to let drivers move on and drive the race cars," Brown said.<\/p>\n

"I believe that's not only drivers, whether that's employees. People want to kind of want to be with the team and vice versa to really have a productive environment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"If it was me, and I'm a little biased, I would say 'why don't you go have some fun with your new team', but that's ultimately their decision."<\/p>\n

The Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix gets underway at 11pm on Sunday.<\/p>\n
