It\u2019s been a difficult six years for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"8e7d435f-494d-4d5d-89ef-0f28ed77bd3e\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/8e7d435f-494d-4d5d-89ef-0f28ed77bd3e\" alt=\"\" data-width=\"6000\" data-height=\"4000\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Berrettini, a big hitter who reached the 2019 semi-finals at Flushing Meadows, dominated in just about every statistical way at Arthur Ashe Stadium.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the one-sided nature of the loss, Murray was philosophical after the defeat and refused to give in to talk of retirement and reaffirmed his commitment to playing.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I want to push and see how far I can go. That will be motivational for me and interesting to see,&quot; Murray said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Lots of people told me I wouldn&#x27;t be able to play again, and lots of people told me I&#x27;d be able to hit tennis balls but not compete professionally again.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;That was nonsense, and I want to see how close I can get back to the top of the game. Yeah, that&#x27;s what the motivation is.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Murray&#x27;s match finished hours before 23-time Grand Slam title winner Serena Williams was due to take on Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round.<\/p>\n<p>Williams drew another large crowd to her warmup session, with loud cheers occasionally breaking out after her best shots.<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"4008e238-bd35-4052-a2f6-fb31f4dfd901\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/4008e238-bd35-4052-a2f6-fb31f4dfd901\" alt=\"Ons Jabeur\" data-width=\"1396\" data-height=\"785\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, let\u2019s go baby!\u201d one fan screamed after Williams followed a good serve with a powerful backhand down the line. She finished soon after and gave a wave to the fans as she walked off toward Ashe, her match about an hour away.<\/p>\n<p>Coco Gauff, an 18-year-old American who reached the final at the French Open in June, made it to the fourth round at the U.S. Open for the first time with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Madison Keys, the 2017 runner-up in New York and seeded 20th this year.<\/p>\n<p>Gauff\u2019s match ended a little more than an hour before Williams-Tomljanovic was due to begin &#8212; and so the teen looked ahead a bit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know she\u2019s on my side of the draw,\u201d Gauff said about Williams, whom she cites as an idol and inspiration and would love to get the chance to face. \u201cHopefully we can both keep winning. (Photo by Andrew Soong\/Xinhua via Getty Images)\" data-width=\"3312\" data-height=\"1862\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In other action during the day session, Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur came back to defeat No.31 Shelby Rogers 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 and avoid the sort of early exit by a high-seeded woman that has filled the first week of play at the year\u2019s last major.<\/p>\n<p>No.2 Anett Kontaveit (who lost to Williams), No.3 Maria Sakkari and No.4 Paula Badosa are all aready gone, as are 2021 champion Emma Raducanu and 2021 runner-up Leylah Fernandez; No.1 Iga Swiatek and No.5 Jabeur have offered a bit of the expected.<\/p>\n<p>Jabeur reached the fourth round in New York for the first time after going 0-3 in the third round since 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinally,\u201d Jabeur said. \u201cI know that I don\u2019t play the best on hard courts, but it\u2019s always amazing to see how I\u2019m improving, how I\u2019m pushing my limits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She next plays No.18 Veronika Kudermetova, who needed just 47 minutes to overwhelm Dalma Galfi 6-2, 6-0.<\/p>\n<p>In the men&#x27;s bracket, French Open runner-up Casper Ruud edged 29th-seeded Tommy Paul in five sets, while No.27 Karen Khachanov moved on when his opponent, Jack Draper, stopped playing in the third set because of an injured hamstring.<\/p>\n<p>The 13th-seeded Berrettini advanced to face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Sunday by hitting more aces than the unseeded Murray, 18-5, delivering far more total winners, 55-24, and accumulating 15 break points, converting five, while facing only four.<\/p>\n<p>Murray\u2019s summation: \u201cI served pretty poorly for a large part of the match.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He won his first Slam trophy at the U.S. Open in 2012, then added titles at Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016, becoming the first British man to triumph there since the 1930s. Murray made it to No.1 in the rankings in 2017; that also was the last time he reached the fourth round at any major, doing so at the All England Club.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, I never played him when he was No.1, but his level seems very high right now. He\u2019s super intelligent. He reads the game very well. &#8230; He made me sweat a lot,\u201d Berrettini said after a match that was interrupted for about five minutes while paramedics attended to a spectator. \u201cHe still moves well. He has a lot of strength in his legs.
