The Brisbane Broncos have responded to news of star forward Payne Haas being arrested over an alleged physical altercation<\/a> in New South Wales' north-east.<\/p>\n

The Kangaroos and Blues representative last night landed in police custody after allegedly being involved in a brawl in Tweed Heads and acting aggressively toward police.<\/p>\n

The Broncos have released the following statement:<\/p>\n

"The Brisbane Broncos can confirm player Payne Haas was involved in an incident with police last night at Tweed Heads," the statement read.<\/p>\n

"He was arrested and charged with offensive language and intimidating police, before being released.<\/p>\n

"The Club has spoken at length with Payne, who is ashamed and extremely remorseful for his actions.<\/p>\n

"Broncos CEO Paul White said: 'It's disappointing and not acceptable – we do set the highest standards for the behaviour of our players, they understand that and Payne knows this is well short of those standards.<\/p>\n

"Payne knows he has done the wrong thing and is prepared to take ownership of his actions.<\/p>\n

"As a Club, we will continue to work with Payne to ensure he understands what he must do to improve, and also ensure he continues to receive the support and education that he needs.'<\/p>\n

"The Broncos are working with the NRL Integrity Unit on the matter."<\/p>\n

NSW Police had already released a statement to the Courier Mail confirming the arrest of a 21-year-old in Tweed Heads.<\/p>\n

"About 10pm Saturday 16th January, officers from Tweed-Byron Police District arrested a 21-year-old man on Coral Street at Tweed Heads after the man allegedly became abusive towards police," the statement read.<\/p>\n

"He was taken to Tweed Heads police station and charged with offensive language and intimidate police.<\/p>\n

"He is due to appear at Tweed Heads Local Court on Tuesday the 2nd of February."<\/p>\n

The NRL said: "The NRL is aware of an alleged incident involving Payne Haas. The Integrity Unit is liasing with both NSW Police and the Brisbane Broncos."<\/p>\n
