Sri Lankan cricket legend Muttiah Muralitharan has ruled a line through Nathan Lyon ever reaching 700-800 Test wickets as the Aussies prepare for the series finale against India in Brisbane on Friday.<\/a><\/p>\n

Muralitharan, the greatest wicket-taker with 800 scalps to his name, revealed Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is the only current player he can see achieving the enormous feet.<\/p>\n

Unlike Shane Warne who claimed 708 Test wickets in his career, the former Sri Lankan spinner believes 33-year-old Lyon, who currently has 396 to his name, isn't "good enough" and has already played "many matches" just to get close to 400.<\/p>\n

"Ashwin has a chance because he is a great bowler," Muralitharan told UK Telegraph.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Muttiah<\/p>\n

"Other than that, I don't think any younger bowler coming in will go to 800.<\/p>\n

"Maybe Nathan Lyon is not good enough to reach it. He is close to 400 but he has had to play many, many matches to get there."<\/p>\n

As Australia and India get set for tomorrow's decider with the Border-Gavaskar trophy up for grabs, Ashwin, 34, currently sits on 377 Test wickets.<\/p>\n

Despite Muralitharan's opinion, Warne believes if Lyon can get injury-free, he can easily add another 250 wickets and get close to the 700 total.<\/p>\n

"If he keeps himself injury-free, I think he could easily go on and play for another five years," Warne told the Herald Sun<\/p>\n

"That's approximately another 50 Tests, and if he continues to take four wickets per game, then that is another 200 \u2013 or maybe 250 if he has a golden five years \u2013 Test wickets.<\/p>\n
