Mark Taylor was disturbed to read Ravichandran Ashwin's accounts of racial abuse while touring Australia<\/a> and the fact that he described Sydney crowds as particularly "nasty."<\/p>\n

The former Test captain urged authorities to "throw the book" at any cricket spectators found guilty of racism.<\/p>\n

But Taylor also believes the issue is a global one and remains dumbfounded as to the motivations of supposed 'sports fans'.<\/p>\n

"It always astounds me why people go to sporting events just to abuse people," Taylor told Wide World of Sports in the wake of a tumultuous drawn third Test<\/a>, in which India fast bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah alleged they were racially abused.<\/p>\n

"I'm not against a little bit of banter, a 'nice shot' or 'well fielded'.<\/p>\n

\"Sydney<\/p>\n

"A little sledge or banter \u2013 as a player you expect that and you don't mind that.<\/p>\n

"As a professional player you need to be able to handle it.<\/p>\n

"But this consistent abuse of people, not just in Australia, it happens around the world at sporting events.<\/p>\n

"I don't know why people want to go, if that's what they're going to do.<\/p>\n

"I reckon they should go and do something else.<\/p>\n

"Because at the SCG there was only 25 percent of the crowd allowed, tickets were limited.<\/p>\n

"So why waste those if that's what you're going to do."<\/p>\n

Cricket Australia were forced to apologise twice to India<\/a> and play was stopped for 10 minutes before six patrons were removed from their seats by police.<\/p>\n

CA has launched an investigation in parallel with NSW Police while the International Cricket Council has also pledged to support the inquiry.<\/p>\n

"Obviously disappointing and if it's racial, that's the next level up," Taylor said.<\/p>\n

"And they should throw the book at these guys if that's what they're doing.<\/p>\n

"I don't know that at this stage.<\/p>\n

"But if you're going to a sporting event to abuse people then just don't go.<\/p>\n

"You're wasting your time and everyone else's."<\/p>\n

While not absolving Sydney, or Australia, of any blame, Taylor – a highly respected figure in the world game – said the issue needed to be tackled globally.<\/p>\n

"There's minority groups of people right around the world that seem to enjoy going to sporting events just to hurl abuse," he said.<\/p>\n

"It's not just isolated in Australia, it's right around the world unfortunately.<\/p>\n

"I was disappointed to read Ravi Ashwin's comments around Sydney being particularly bad.<\/p>\n

"From a New South Welshman's point of view, that really disappoints me because I don't think there's a need for it in the game.<\/p>\n

"I'd like to see it stamped out if possible.<\/p>\n

"But I don't see this is a Sydney, NSW or Australia problem \u2013 it's something that can happen anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n

"Players don't have to put up with continual abuse.<\/p>\n

"It's mundane and a slight on the game.<\/p>\n
