The Dragons' great white hope Jack Bird<\/a> looks set to reinvent his career as a second-rower in 2021.<\/p>\n

Bird is playing for his career this season after two poor years at Brisbane in 2018-19 and then a knee injury<\/a> that saw him sit out all of last season.<\/p>\n

And the former Dally M Rookie of the Year and NSW State of Origin utility has been training in the back-row for his new beginning.<\/p>\n

Bird is one of the most versatile players in the comp, with the ability to play fullback, centre, five-eighth or lock.<\/p>\n

He has bulked up to play back-row and has the ability to break the line with his nuggety frame, strength and leg speed.<\/p>\n

"Jack has the makings of a top back-rower," my Dragons insider told me.<\/p>\n

"He may start the year in the backs but we see him as a very dangerous edge runner.<\/p>\n

"He has been training very strongly and his knee isn't causing him any trouble."<\/p>\n

TITANS PINCH WARRIORS YOUNG GUN<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Warriors have lost one of their best young forwards to the Titans.<\/p>\n

Vaka Sikahele, an 18-year-old hooker who can also play lock, was a standout for the Warriors in the SG Ball last year and has also represented the Kiwis at under-18 level, captaining NZ Schools.<\/p>\n

He is expected to play with Burleigh Bears this year before stepping up to the first grade squad in 2022.<\/p>\n

WIDDOP AIMS TO BOUNCE BACK FROM NRL SNUB<\/strong><\/h2>\n

So what now for Gareth Widdop?<\/p>\n

You have to feel for the former Dragons star, who returned to Australia hoping to find a club and be reunited with his young family.<\/p>\n

Widdop spent two weeks in quarantine after flying in from England, cut his asking price in half – and was still shunned by all 16 NRL clubs.<\/p>\n

The classy utility is now back in the UK and after a disappointing season with Warrington in 2020, is looking to pick up the pieces.<\/p>\n

But the Wolves, having allowed him to leave and then taking him back, want him to produce this year.<\/p>\n

"He's welcome back but we're expecting big things from him," club boss Karl Fitzpatrick told me.<\/p>\n
