Tim Paine<\/a> talked the talk but couldn't walk the walk in a heated final session of the gripping SCG Test<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Aussie skipper unleashed a barrage of sledges but got sloppy with the gloves – opening the door for social media to slip the boot in.<\/p>\n

Ears pricked when stump microphones relayed a spicy exchange of words between Paine and India hero Ravichandran Ashwin<\/a>, as the visitors stonewalled through 131 overs to save the third Test in miraculous fashion.<\/p>\n

"Jeez, I can't wait to get you to The Gabba, Ash. I tell you what," Paine was heard saying on Fox Cricket's coverage during a Nathan Lyon over.<\/p>\n

"Just like we can't wait to get you to India," Ashwin shot back.<\/p>\n

"It will be your last series."<\/p>\n

"Maybe," Paine said.<\/p>\n

"Are you a selector here as well?<\/p>\n

"At least my teammates like me, d—head."<\/p>\n

Another Australia fielder then appeared to warn Ashwin of an impending "broken rib," an eerie throwback to former Australia captain Michael Clarke threatening England's James Anderson in the 2013-14 Ashes with the words, "Get ready for a broken f—ing arm."<\/p>\n

Paine continued.<\/p>\n

"I've got more Indian friends than you do," he said.<\/p>\n

"Even your teammates think you're a goose, don't they? Every one of them.<\/p>\n

"Wait till you get to The Gabba, pal.<\/p>\n

"How many IPL teams wanted you when you asked every single one of them to have ya?"<\/p>\n

Paine was then the one looking like "a goose" when he spilled a relatively simple take – by his own high standards – in the following over, lurching to his right and putting down India batsman Hanuma Vihari.<\/p>\n

Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting piled on.<\/p>\n

"Paine said last over he thought he had more Indian friends than Ashwin," he said on Seven's coverage.<\/p>\n

"Well I reckon he's got a few more now."<\/p>\n

Indian great Sunil Gavaskar joined in.<\/p>\n

"100 per cent. 100 per cent," Gavaskar said.<\/p>\n

To his credit, Paine – who dropped three catches on day five – later took the blame for Australia failing to bowl India out.<\/p>\n
