Towering praise is flooding in for Oscar Piastri<\/a> after the Australian racing young gun clinched the 2021 Formula 2 championship in Abu Dhabi on Saturday<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 20-year-old Melbourne product executed a tactically brilliant drive on the penultimate day of the championship to finish third in Abu Dhabi's first sprint race of the weekend. He had the title sewed up with two races remaining in the season.<\/p>\n

Piastri, who in November was revealed as Alpine's Formula 1 reserve driver for 2022<\/a>, has now won three titles in as many years, having conquered the 2019 Formula Eurocup, 2020 Formula 3 championship and this year's Formula 2 tournament.<\/p>\n

Piastri has also joined George Russell<\/a> and Charles Leclerc<\/a> \u2013 both Formula 1<\/a> drivers in 2021 \u2013 as one of just three to have won the top junior division in a rookie season.<\/p>\n

Veteran Fernando Alonso<\/a>, a two-time Formula 1 champion, is contracted to Alpine until the end of 2022, and Piastri is expected to replace the Spaniard in 2023.<\/p>\n

"What a season from him," tweeted Formula 1 journalist Chris Medland after Piastri's triumph.<\/p>\n

"Absolutely the real deal.<\/p>\n

"Such a shame he won't be in F1 next year."<\/p>\n

Dario Franchitti, a four-time IndyCar Series and three-time Indianapolis 500 champion, labelled Piastri "pure class".<\/p>\n

"A very bright F1 future ahead," Franchitti added.<\/p>\n

Russell, now racing with Williams in Formula 1 and set to join Mercedes, posted: "Congratulations, Oscar Piastri. Impressive season!".<\/p>\n

Formula 1 commentary icon Martin Brundle<\/a> wrote: "Pretty clear that Oscar will be a full-time F1 driver sooner than later, to add to the great young talent we already have going forward".<\/p>\n

And Formula 1 reporter Luke Smith posted: "Hell of a drive, hell of a season!".<\/p>\n

Conjecture overhangs Guanyu Zhou's admission into Formula 1 for 2022, given the Chinese driver this year competed in Formula 2 for the third time but went a third year in succession without winning a title.<\/p>\n

Zhou will in 2022 partner Valterri Bottas<\/a> at Alfa Romeo despite Piastri having been a far-superior driver in the junior categories.<\/p>\n
