Australia look set to be without Josh Hazlewood<\/a> for the second Ashes<\/a> Test, with the quick all-but-confirmed to not be travelling to Adelaide.<\/p>\n

Jhye Richardson, who was 12th man in the opening Test, is the favourited to replace him ahead of Michael Neser, despite the latter's fine showing in an Australia A match.<\/p>\n

Hazlewood reportedly boarded a flight to Sydney from Brisbane on Sunday.<\/p>\n

On Sunday evening, Cricket Australia's website confirmed that Hazlewood had been flown home rather than travelling with the team, but said he had not yet officially been ruled out.<\/p>\n

Still, it seems unlikely that he will able to recover from the side strain that he suffered during the nine-wicket win in Brisbane, given the action that's been taken.<\/p>\n

The move may be more precautionary than anything else. When pressed about Hazlewood's status on Saturday, Pat Cummins said as much.<\/p>\n

"I think a key is we don't want to put him in jeopardy for the whole series," he said.<\/p>\n

You could make the argument for either Richardson or Neser being a fine replacement – Richardson's inclusion as the 12th man at the Gabba and his Shield performances on one hand, Neser's 5-29 in the first innings for Australia A against the Lions on the other.<\/p>\n

Former Test captain Mark Taylor said that because it was Hazlewood and not Starc or Cummins, he would have opted for Neser as the more like-for-like replacement.<\/p>\n

"Michael Neser's probably a little more like Hazlewood, and you'd probably say that Jhye Richardson's a bit more like a Pat Cummins," he said.<\/p>\n

"If it were Starc or Cummins who were out, I think Richardson would be straight in."<\/p>\n
