The North Queensland Cowboys are the latest team to throw their hat in the ring for rising Brisbane Broncos star Xavier Coates, according to reports. <\/p>\n

According to the Courier Mail<\/em>, Coates met with Cowboys coach Todd Payten and football boss Michael Luck in Townsville last month, before being spotted meeting Storm coach Craig Bellamy.<\/p>\n

Despite a horror year for his NRL team, the 19-year-old enjoyed a tremendous 2020 season on a personal level, scoring two tries in his debut Origin campaign for the Maroons.<\/p>\n

Coates' unique blend of size and athleticism has already seen him draw comparisons to Queensland icon Greg Inglis, and Payten confirmed his side's interest.<\/p>\n

"He is a good player and we've had a conversation but that's as far as it's gone at the moment. He has had a look around up here," Payten said.<\/p>\n

"It would be for 2022 and beyond. He is an Origin player and did really well.<\/p>\n

"I would imagine he has got several clubs chasing him and rightly so. He is a pleasant young kid who has aspirations to do really well in his career.<\/p>\n

"We're one of many I'd imagine."<\/p>\n

Out of contract at the end of 2021, Coates is said to still be open to remaining with the Broncos despite shopping himself around to rival clubs this summer.<\/p>\n
