North Melbourne star Ben Cunnington<\/a> is set to undergo a nine-week course of chemotherapy after the detection of a secondary cancer this week. <\/p>\n

The 30-year-old had surgery in July<\/a> after the discovery of a testicular tumour, but a routine post-surgery check-up resulted in another cancer being found.<\/p>\n

While the discovery of a secondary cancer is a setback, the Kangaroos say that Cunnington is expected to make a full recovery.<\/p>\n

"Due to the sensitive nature of this news, North Melbourne asks that privacy is afforded to Ben, his immediate and extended family, friends, teammates, coaches and staff," the club said in a statement on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Cunnington enjoyed a tremendous 2021 season, finishing runner-up in the club's best and fairest award despite playing in just 15 matches.<\/p>\n

"Just to have the support from the club, the players and my beautiful family. I could not have done it without them," Cunnington said.<\/p>\n

Cunnington has been an ever-present part of the Kangaroos' midfield since being drafted to the club with the fifth pick in the 2009 draft, and has played 227 AFL matches.<\/p>\n

North Melbourne says it will make no further comment on Cunnington's recovery at this stage.<\/p>\n
