Australia's T20 World Cup semi-final hero Matthew Wade<\/a> concedes he had considered the possibility this morning's match may have been his last game for his country.<\/p>\n

Much-maligned over the years, Wade conjured up a remarkable victory<\/a> against Pakistan with an unbeaten 41 from just 17 balls, finishing the match with three consecutive sixes to book Australia's spot in the final against New Zealand.<\/p>\n

A loss for Australia may have seen the selectors terminate Wade's career, with the highly-rated Josh Inglis waiting in the wings.<\/p>\n

Wade was dropped from the T20 side in 2016, with Tim Paine<\/a> and Peter Handscomb both tried briefly, while Alex Carey had an extended run in the side, before Wade was recalled last year.<\/p>\n

"I was a little bit nervous coming into the game and knowing that potentially this could be the last opportunity I get to represent Australia," he said.<\/p>\n

"I just wanted to do well and really wanted us to win this game to give us an opportunity to win the whole thing.<\/p>\n

"We've got a great bunch of guys in that dressing room and guys that I've played for a long, long period of time with."<\/p>\n

Wade's recall has also seen him stand in as Australian captain for six matches in Aaron Finch's absence.<\/p>\n

It's an incredible comeback for a player who didn't represent his country in any format of the game for 22 months, a hiatus that stretched from October 2017 to August 2019.<\/p>\n

Only a week ago, former selector Greg Chappell revealed in his new book that Wade's recall to the Test team in 2016 in place of Peter Nevill left him furious.<\/p>\n

Chappell wrote that he walked into the office of Cricket Australia high performance boss Pat Howard, saying the decision would "end in tears."<\/p>\n

Wade's final Test recall for the 2019 Ashes came as a specialist batter, while the keeping gloves have seen him earn his spot back for the shortest form of the game.<\/p>\n

"I'm just happy that I got the opportunity to reinvent myself, to go away and come back with more confidence and really feel like I belong at international level now," said Wade.<\/p>\n

"I reinvented myself into a batsman and then all of a sudden now I'm playing as a keeper-batsman again and batting down at seven.<\/p>\n

"The older I am the more eyes-wide-open I am about the opportunity I got. It didn't worry me to go down the order, it hasn't worried me at all whether I captained or not."<\/p>\n

Axed from the Test squad that was due to go to South Africa earlier this year, he appears to be a long-shot for this summer's Ashes series, with fellow left-handers Travis Head and Usman Khawaja likely to be in front of him in the queue for the number five spot in the batting order.<\/p>\n

That might have bothered him when he was younger, but now, as a seasoned veteran, he appears to be at peace with his place in the game.<\/p>\n

"I don't know when my last game is going to be, I treated every game like it potentially could be," he explained.<\/p>\n

"I'm sure when it's all over, when I get the tap on the shoulder I'll look back on the last three or four years and be really proud of the way that I came back.<\/p>\n

"It's not the first time that I've come back \u2013 I've been dropped four or five times. It might be the most ever in Australian cricket."<\/p>\n
