England's Australian rugby coach Eddie Jones has revealed he wrote a letter to tennis star Emma Raducanu in a bid to explain his controversial comments which were slammed as "uninformed and sexist."<\/a><\/p>\n

Jones was comparing US Open champion Raducanu, 18, to new England rugby sensation Marcus Smith, 22, when speaking to media this week, warning of the "flood of distractions" that high profile young athletes had to navigate in the modern era.<\/p>\n

Jones claimed there was "a reason" that Raducanu "hasn't done so well" since winning the US Open in September.<\/p>\n

"What have you seen her on? The front page of Vogue, the front page of Harper's Bazaar, whatever it is, wearing Christian Dior clothes," Jones said.<\/p>\n

The highly successful 61-year-old coach was widely panned for the comments which were viewed by many as at best patronising and irrelevant.<\/p>\n

"The whole point was how difficult it is for young players to cope with distractions," Jones told BBC Sport ahead of Sunday's (4.30am AEDT) Test between England and the Wallabies.<\/a><\/p>\n

"So the point I made was not wrong. I can't control if it's taken out of context.<\/p>\n

"There was no criticism of Emma. I have sent her a letter just to reinforce that and hopefully we'll see her at Twickenham shortly."<\/p>\n

However, The Guardian reported that Raducanu would pass on Jones' invitation to attend an England game this season.<\/a><\/p>\n

"I don't have any misgivings about what I said – I am disappointed it was taken out of context, and I would be disappointed if Emma was upset by it," Jones said.<\/p>\n

"It was deemed as being sexist and that was never the aim of the point.<\/p>\n
