The Cowboys<\/a> have confirmed Coen Hess will remain in North Queensland after wrapping up a contract extension with the former Queensland Origin rep just days before he would have sprung onto the open market.<\/p>\n

Hess, who was under contract for one more season, today agreed to a two-year deal that will keep him at the club until the end of the 2024 season. Had a deal not been done before November 1 he would have been free to negotiate with all 16 of the other NRL clubs, including the newly formed Dolphins.<\/p>\n

The 25-year-old's new deal comes after a season in which he was awarded the Paul Bowman Medal as the club's player of the year.<\/p>\n

"We are thrilled to have secured Coen for a further two years," Cowboys General Manager of Football Micheal Luck said.<\/p>\n

\"Coen<\/p>\n

"He's a North Queensland junior who came through our system as a second-rower, but was moved to middle forward last year and we were really pleased with how he handled the transition.<\/p>\n

"This extension ensures Coen can continue to focus on his development as a footballer, but also as an emerging leader in our playing group who we believe will be crucial in guiding our next generation of young forwards."<\/p>\n

To date, the North Queensland back-rower has played 118 NRL games for the club since making his debut in 2015.<\/p>\n

Hess has represented Queensland on six occasions, and while he didn't line up for his state in this year's series, the forward was part of the Maroons' extended squad for all three games.<\/p>\n

He made 22 appearances for the Cowboys this season.<\/p>\n
