{"id":140709,"date":"2021-10-08T01:05:56","date_gmt":"2021-10-08T01:05:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/?p=140709"},"modified":"2021-10-08T04:00:10","modified_gmt":"2021-10-08T04:00:10","slug":"jaw-dropping-takeover-completed-by-600b-owners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/?p=140709","title":{"rendered":"Jaw-dropping takeover completed by $600b owners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saudi Arabia&#x27;s sovereign wealth fund have completed a buyout of Premier League club Newcastle, giving hope to fans dreaming of a first title in almost a century but concerning human rights activists that the kingdom had gained a foothold in the world&#x27;s richest football league.<\/p>\n<p>Supporters descended on the club&#x27;s St. James&#x27; Park stadium, some chanting \u201cwe are Saudis, we do what we want&quot; and others singing \u201cwe\u2019ve got our club back&quot; amid the promise of long-desired investment.<\/p>\n<p>The \u00a3300 million-pound ($558 million AUD) takeover had been pursued since 2017 but stalled and then collapsed last year over concerns about how much control the Saudi state would have in the running of Newcastle amid scrutiny over piracy of sports broadcasts and human rights violations in the kingdom.<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"96515cc3-fc63-47c4-829b-245244bac8a5\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/96515cc3-fc63-47c4-829b-245244bac8a5\" alt=\"\" data-width=\"1396\" data-height=\"1060\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It led to a protracted legal fight that only ended this week when the Public Investment Fund offered assurances to the Premier League that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and in turn the state, would not have any say in the team.<\/p>\n<p>PIF has bought 80 per cent of the club \u2014 which is in the relegation zone after seven matches \u2014 with the wealthy British-based Reuben brothers and financier Amanda Staveley\u2019s PCP Capital Partners owning the rest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe big change was the control issue,\u201d Staveley told The Associated Press. \u201dWe needed to demonstrate there was sufficient separation between PIF and the Saudi state, and that has been determined that there is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Watch Messi, Neymar, Ronaldo and football&#x27;s biggest superstars in the<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stan.com.au\/football?utm_source=wwos&amp;utm_medium=partner&amp;utm_campaign=football_article\"><strong><em>UEFA Champions League\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em>with every match streaming ad free, live and on demand only on Stan Sport. The fund\u2019s governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan will be on the board at the northeast English club as non-executive chairman.<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"a28ace38-9322-451d-9193-8e5ec14eb198\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/a28ace38-9322-451d-9193-8e5ec14eb198\" alt=\"\" data-width=\"1920\" data-height=\"1080\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe crown prince is chairman of a lot of entities in Saudi,&quot; said Staveley, who will also be on the club&#x27;s board. \u201cPIF is very much an autonomous, commercially driven investment fund, and it does not operate as part of the wider state. But it\u2019s a star.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With no wins and only three points from seven games, the poor start to the season means the future of manager Steve Bruce will be assessed before the next game next week \u2014 at home to Tottenham on October 17 \u2014 after the international break.<\/p>\n<p>The club will be seeking a transformation in the same manner enjoyed by Manchester City in 2008 after its takeover by another Middle Eastern entity \u2014 Abu Dhabi \u2014 that was also brokered by Staveley.<\/p>\n<p>A key impediment to the Newcastle takeover was the pirating of sports broadcasts from Qatari-owned beIN \u2014 including of Premier League games \u2014 by an entity the World Trade Organisation said was facilitated by the Saudi state.<\/p>\n<p>The Saudis declared beIN illegal in 2017 as they launched a wider economic and diplomatic boycott of Qatar alongside the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain over accusations Doha supports extremism. Amnesty International wrote to league chief executive Richard Masters last year to say the takeover could be exploited by Saudi Arabia to cover up \u201cdeeply immoral\u201d breaches of international law, citing human rights violations and the role of the crown prince.<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty raised concerns with Masters about the 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul after U.S. intelligence services said they believe the slaying came at the crown prince\u2019s orders.
