An impressive all-round match from rising superstar Ashleigh Gardner was not enough to help Australia avoid a draw against India in the Test at Metricon Stadium<\/a> on the Gold Coast.<\/p>\n

Gardner took a superb diving catch in the outfield while running at pace on day four to dismiss India's batting threat, Smriti Mandhana (watch the video above)<\/p>\n

Gardner had also dismissed Mandhana for 127 in the first innings with her off-spin bowling, and the 24-year-old scored her maiden Test half-century with 51 runs off 86 deliveries to cap what was a superb individual game.<\/p>\n

But her brilliance could not force a result in the Test – her first on home soil – which ended in a draw thanks to some slow batting and wet weather over the course of the four days.<\/p>\n

Australia was also cruelled by some poor fielding, with Gardner's incredible outfield catch the exception in what was overall a disappointing match.<\/p>\n

"The first word (to describe the Test) would be frustrating," Australia coach Matthew Mott said.<\/p>\n

"For a while we've been looking forward to this, we knew India would be a great challenge for us, and we thought we'd hit happy times winning the toss \u2013 the wicket had a tinge of green, and we had a very good pace attack.<\/p>\n

"But we probably just missed our mark in the first hour and they got away to a really good start.<\/p>\n

"We bowled too short and too wide … we set out, with picking so many fast bowlers, to make the most of the conditions … it was a bit slower than expected but I still think we didn't execute exactly what we wanted to execute, and we paid a pretty heavy price.<\/p>\n

"From there on we just felt like we were just clawing it back a little bit, and India played really well \u2026 we were behind for the rest of the game, and they held all the aces.<\/p>\n

"They earnt the right to put us under pressure and we never got back in the game.<\/p>\n

"Our catching was (also) an issue. We had upwards of eight chances in that first innings."<\/p>\n

The next match in the multi-format series between Australia and India is the first Twenty20, to be played on Thursday at Metricon Stadium<\/a>.<\/p>\n
