The All Blacks have survived a major scare from a rejuvenated Springboks outfit, downing South Africa 19-17 at the death<\/a> in tonight's historic 100th Test between the two heavyweight nations.<\/p>\n

Trailing by one point with two minutes to play, a Jordie Barrett penalty goal from a 45 degree angle, 45 metres out, crushed the hearts of the world champions as the All Blacks secured the Rugby Championship for the seventh time.<\/p>\n

South Africa appeared destined to hang on before young Quinn Tupaea won a crucial ruck penalty and handed Barrett the opportunity to steal victory.<\/p>\n

It was a seesawing affair until Barrett's big boot stepped up, with the All Blacks holding off one final onslaught from South Africa.<\/p>\n

The match started with tries to both sides in the opening five minutes before penalty goals dominated.<\/p>\n

The Springboks led 14-13, then the All Blacks 16-13. South Africa went ahead 17-16 in the 67th minute before Barrett's match-winning goal.<\/p>\n

Heading into the match, New Zealand were considered heavy favourites due to South Africa's poor showing against the Wallabies<\/a>, in which they lost back-to-back Tests.<\/p>\n

But South Africa reminded rugby fans just why they're the world champions.<\/p>\n

They took it to the new No.1 ranked nation and nearly pulled off the upset in an encounter that also saw them lose a man for 10 minutes when S'busiso Nkosi copped a yellow card.<\/p>\n

"A lot of criticism over the last couple of weeks, especially back in South Africa," Tim Horan said in commentary for Stan Sport.<\/p>\n

"They've gone back to really simple Test match footy."<\/p>\n

All Blacks great Andrew Mehrtens said tonight's bounce back from the South African side was a great result for the sport.<\/p>\n

"It's a great sight for world rugby, the Springboks on a full charge," Mehrtens said in commentary for Stan Sport.<\/p>\n

"We know they were maligned at times for playing a limited game plan.<\/p>\n

"They're only responsibility is to play a game plan that is best for them to win the game.<\/p>\n

"They've always had that ability to move the ball around, even if they've chosen not to.<\/p>\n

"It's a frightening sight and an impressive sight."<\/p>\n

The All Blacks now have won 60 of the 100 matches between the teams, the Springboks 36 with four draws. Of the last 22 matches between the teams, New Zealand has won 18.<\/p>\n
