Test captain Tim Paine<\/a> is set to undergo surgery on his neck, throwing Australia<\/a>'s preparation for their home Ashes<\/a> series into further chaos.<\/p>\n

Cricket Australia released a statement this afternoon confirming that Paine would have surgery to repair a pinched nerve in his neck, which the medical team is hoping will have him primed for the start of the summer.<\/p>\n

It is hoped Paine will be able to return to physical activity by the end of this month in the hope of resuming full training during October.<\/p>\n

"The consensus of the spinal surgeon and the CA medical team was to have the surgery now, which will allow plenty of time to fully prepare for the summer," Paine said.<\/p>\n

"I will be ready to go by the first Test and am very much looking forward to what will be a huge summer."<\/p>\n

As Australia look to retain the Ashes on home soil, there are rumblings of factions between the playing group and coach Justin Langer<\/a>, with leaks shedding light on his intense style of coaching<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The sole Test that Australia is scheduled to play during the lead-up to the Ashes<\/a> is also now highly unlikely to go ahead, due to Cricket Australia's stance against the Taliban's refusal to let women play international cricket<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, creating another layer of drama to Australia's Ashes preparation is there's no guarantee that England<\/a> will agree to travel to Australia, given the harsh COVID-19 quarantine rules likely to be imposed.<\/p>\n
