Australian NFL<\/a> star Jordan Mailata<\/a> had a strong showing in his first start since inking a lucrative multi-million-dollar contract extension<\/a> with the Philadelphia Eagles.<\/p>\n

The start of a new era couldn't have gone much better for the Philadelphia Eagles. Or much worse for the Atlanta Falcons.<\/p>\n

Jalen Hurts threw three touchdown passes, the first of them to Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith, and the Eagles made a winner of Nick Sirianni in his head coaching debut with a 32-6 rout of the hapless Falcons.<\/p>\n

The win put the Eagles atop the NFC East conference, and Mailata<\/a> proved he was worth every cent<\/a> of his new contract, showcasing his skill and devastating strength at left tackle on the offensive line.<\/p>\n

Mailata<\/a> downright drilled his opposition with a massive block clearing the path for wide receiver Jalen Reagor to score a superb touchdown for the Eagles.<\/p>\n

"Just doing my job," Mailata<\/a> said post-game of the play.<\/p>\n

"The timing had to be perfect and for me it was knowing the snap-count first and knowing the timing of the screen and burying somebody if you have the opportunity."<\/p>\n

The Bankstown product's efforts did not go unnoticed by fans or commentators.<\/p>\n

In another game highlight Mailata also helped Philadelphia rookie and fifth-round pick Kenneth Gainwell, score his first touchdown as a pro by creating a huge gap for the running back to trot through to essentially seal the victory.<\/p>\n

The 24-year-old former South Sydney Rabbitohs junior walked onto the field in Atlanta pre-game wearing slides and shades, with perhaps a little more swagger in his step after convincingly winning the starting left tackle job in pre-season and locking in a huge contract extension yesterday worth $87 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to ESPN NFL inside Adam Schefter, the deal "could be worth" as much as $108.7 million, with $55.5 million guaranteed money.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mailata said the bumper deal had earned him a new nickname in the Eagles locker room – Jordan 'Big Money' Mailata.<\/p>\n

"It's an incredible feat. I'm extremely blessed to have gotten that extension," he said.<\/p>\n

"It gives me an opportunity to represent my family, my country, my people.<\/p>\n

\"Eagles<\/p>\n

"They all had a similar reaction – everyone called me 'Big Money'. I told them not to call me that. I'm just trying to take it day by day and still have the same process.<\/p>\n

"I've been wanting to buy my parents a house so I can finally do that.<\/p>\n

"I think it is a movie – I'm just waiting for someone to say 'Cut'."<\/p>\n

Another highlight for Australian NFL fans was former AFL player Arryn Siposs having an excellent debut for the Eagles.<\/p>\n

The rookie punter averaged 47.3 gross yards per punt, with two landing inside the 10-yard line. He also held kicks seamlessly for Jake Elliott who made all three of his extra point attempts as well as a 43-yard field goal.<\/p>\n

Now firmly entrenched as the Eagles starter after Carson Wentz was traded, quarterback Hurts certainly looked the part with touchdown passes of 18 yards to Smith, 9 yards to Dallas Goedert and 23 yards to Reagor.<\/p>\n

"We wanted to come out in Week 1 and start off the right way," said Hurts, who guided the Eagles to more points than they scored in any game a year ago. "It feels good."<\/p>\n

The Falcons looked downright inept in their first game under coach Arthur Smith.<\/p>\n

After settling for field goals on two impressive drives to start the game, Atlanta didn't do much of anything the rest of the way. The Falcons never advanced farther than the Philadelphia 49 and finished with just 260 yards.<\/p>\n

Matt Ryan was held to 164 yards passing and sacked three times.<\/p>\n

"I did a really poor job getting us ready to go," Smith said. "That game is not going to define us. It's a long season to go, but I certainly didn't do a good enough job getting us ready to go today."<\/p>\n

In a matchup of the NFC's two worst teams from 2020, the Eagles looked to have made far more improvement with a revamped offense led by Hurts and a healthy line in front of him.<\/p>\n

He completed 27 of 35 passes for 264 yards and used his mobility to repeatedly neutralize Atlanta's attempts to shake him up with a wide variety of blitzes. He rushed for 62 yards on seven carries and was sacked only once.<\/p>\n

"Jalen was in complete control the whole game," Sirianni said. "I'm very happy with the way he played."<\/p>\n
