Rugby league great Phil Gould believes referee Gerard Sutton was sucked into media pressure after Nathan Cleary was the recipient of a controversial penalty.<\/p>\n

During South Sydney's win tonight over the Panthers<\/a>, Rabbitohs back-rower Keaon Koloamatangi was penalised for a late shot on Cleary moments after the Penrith playmaker put up a fifth tackle kick.<\/p>\n

It was a decision that didn't sit well with rugby league Immortal Andrew Johns, who blasted the referee's decision to penalise the South Sydney forward.<\/p>\n

"There is nothing wrong with that," Johns said in commentary for Nine.<\/p>\n

"He's committed to the tackle. He sprints to get there, the extra effort to put pressure on him… no penalty, never, never ever."<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Gould said Sutton's decision was an example of the referee getting sucked into media pressure after Penrith earlier in the week urged the NRL to be on notice for an "illegal South Sydney ambush" against Cleary<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"That's what the pressure in the media comes from," Gould said.<\/p>\n

"Referees read the papers, don't worry.<\/p>\n

"The Panthers have planted this in the minds of the referees leading into it.<\/p>\n

"Bennett tried to reply to it, by saying 'they have blockers, we can never get next to him'."<\/p>\n
