Queensland Origin great Billy Slater has addressed speculation<\/a> he has been approached to be the next Maroons coach<\/a>.<\/p>\n

During Melbourne' 40-12 win over Manly<\/a> on Friday night, Slater responded to reports<\/a> that he is a front-runner to become the Maroons' head coach after Paul Green's shock exit<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"I want to stress that we haven't gotten to an offer or acceptance sort of thing just yet," Slater told Nine.<\/p>\n

\"Former<\/p>\n

"There's been an expression of my interest in coaching the Queensland team and given the care I have for Queensland and how high I hold the role, I'm certainly considering it.<\/p>\n

"But at the same time I've got some existing commitments.<\/p>\n

"I've got family commitments and I respect the role that much that I know how much I will put into the role, and I know how much it will demand and the commitment it will take.<\/p>\n

"So it's not just an easy decision to say, 'Yes', but certainly [there is] some consideration there."<\/p>\n

Legendary Nine NRL commentator Ray 'Rabs' Warren pressed Slater during the Friday night footy whether he had been approached by Queensland Rugby League but the retired fullback was coy.<\/p>\n

"I care about Queensland, Rabs, so therefore there's consideration and interest for myself around the position," Slater said.<\/p>\n

"It's not a cut and dry situation for me. I've really got to consider the position and how much focus and input that would take out of what I'm doing."<\/p>\n

Slater retired at the end of 2018, and was first linked with the role before Green's appointment for the 2021 Origin series<\/a>, which Queensland lost 2-1.<\/p>\n

NSW Blues legend Andrew Johns asked Slater how he would feel coaching players he had not too long ago played with and whether that would be a potential concern for him.<\/p>\n

"Not at all. That's not a worry to me," Slater replied.<\/p>\n

He refused to say concretely whether he would or wouldn't accept the role at the moment "out of respect to the position".<\/p>\n

"The consideration is around my existing commitments and the respect I give the position because it's not just turn up to three games – it's more than that and it's about the direction Queensland Rugby League want to go with it," Slater said on Nine.<\/p>\n

"I know how much this means.<\/p>\n

"I've got to consider everything before I make a decision.<\/p>\n

"I think there's a lot of good people that can be involved in the Queensland Rugby League system. The QRL are working towards that.<\/p>\n

"They're doing a fantastic job and they've got an eye on the future, so we will see what happens."<\/p>\n
