Almost exactly a year to the day after he was defaulted from the US Open<\/a> for accidentally hitting a lineswoman, world No.1 Novak Djokovic<\/a> has again tempted fate in New York.<\/p>\n

Holding a two-sets to one lead over Matteo Berrettini in their quarter-final, Djokovic became frustrated as the New York crowds heckled him during play.<\/p>\n

The Serbian was forced to back away, throwing his arms in the air and calling for chair umpire James Keothavong to control the crowd.<\/p>\n

"People are still yelling out in the middle of Djokovic's service motion, so he's not happy," said John McEnroe on ESPN.<\/p>\n

"It's the after-midnight vibe now."<\/p>\n

On the next point a Berrettini return landed long, with Djokovic half volleying the ball in the direction of Keothavong at some pace, nearly collecting one of the ball boys in the process.<\/p>\n

"He smacked that ball over in the direction of the chair umpire," McEnroe said.<\/p>\n

"He said, 'Get your act together'."<\/p>\n

It took lead commentator Chris Fowler by surprise, immediately referencing last year's incident.<\/p>\n

"I'd be a little bit careful smacking those balls around in random directions," he said.<\/p>\n

Djokovic was immediately defaulted from last year's tournament after smacking a ball in frustration, when that ball collected a lineswoman in the throat.<\/p>\n

This year the US Open is using fully automated line-calling, so there's no line judges on court.<\/p>\n

It was a minor hiccup for Djokovic, who overcame the loss of the first set for the third match running, to down Berrettini 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 in three hours and 27 minutes.<\/p>\n

The sixth seed took a marathon opening set in 77 minutes, but couldn't maintain the intensity, and Djokovic gradually took control.<\/p>\n

"It was a great match, a lot of energy on the court, off the court as well," Djokovic said.<\/p>\n

"Matteo is a terrific player, he's an established top-10 player, every time we face each other it's a close battle.<\/p>\n

"I was locked in from the beginning of the second set, I put my tennis to a different level. It's been the best three sets I've played so far in the tournament."<\/p>\n

Berrettini secured the only break of the first set with a crosscourt forehand that left Djokovic stranded at the net, having moved to his left in anticipation of an attempted pass up the line.<\/p>\n

The Serbian showed his frustration at the change of ends, gesturing to his team and muttering to himself.<\/p>\n

Sitting courtside, Patrick McEnroe said Djokovic was just blowing off steam.<\/p>\n

"I was looking at the camp the entire time and nobody moved a muscle," he explained on ESPN.<\/p>\n

"It didn't look like he was talking to any one person in particular, just venting."<\/p>\n

Djokovic bounced back immediately, breaking Berrettini in the fourth game of the second set, and again in the eighth game to take the set 6-2, and from then on he wasn't really troubled.<\/p>\n

It's the eighth time this year that Djokovic has dropped the first set of a match at a grand slam, including his last two matches in New York, against Jenson Brooksby and Kei Nishikori.<\/p>\n

Berrettini took the first set off Djokovic in the Wimbledon final earlier this year, before the Serbian rallied to win in four.<\/p>\n

Djokovic now plays Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals.<\/p>\n
