Maria Sakkari has eliminated 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu in the latest-finishing women\u2019s match in tournament history to reach the US Open<\/a> quarterfinals for the first time.<\/p>\n

Sakkari came back to win 6-7 (2), 7-6 (6), 6-3 as Andreescu had trouble with a left leg that was taped by a trainer during a medical timeout in the third set. Andreescu limped around between points down the stretch and her leg buckled a few times.<\/p>\n

The three-and-a-half-hour match ended at nearly 2:15am. The previous women\u2019s record was a 1:48am finish for a first-round match in 2016, in which Madison Keys beat Alison Riske. Three men\u2019s matches have wrapped up at 2:26am.<\/p>\n

Both players\u2019 grunts reverberated off the thousands of unused blue seats in Arthur Ashe Stadium. Fans who remained engaged in dueling first-name chants: \u201cMa-ri-a!\u201d and \u201cBi-an-ca!\u201d<\/p>\n

Sakkari joked about the marathon duel in her on-court interview.<\/p>\n

"Before I say 'thank you', I hope you're not late to work tomorrow, because I'll be in trouble for that," a laughing Sakkari said to the crowd.<\/p>\n

"Thank you so much for staying so late. Go and get some sleep and I'll see you in two days."<\/p>\n

This was Andreescu\u2019s first loss in the main draw at Flushing Meadows. She beat Serena Williams<\/a> in the final to win the title in her debut two years ago and missed the hard-court grand slam tournament in 2020 while sitting out the entire season with an injured knee.<\/p>\n

The 17th-seeded Sakkari will face two-time grand slam runner-up Karolina Pliskova<\/a> in the quarterfinals.<\/p>\n

Sakkari\u2019s best showing at a major tournament was a semifinal run at Roland-Garros<\/a> in June.<\/p>\n
