For the second year running, the AFL Grand Final<\/a> will be broadcast at nighttime for Australia's east coast, with league executives announcing the opening bounce of the Perth fixture will be at 7.15pm AEST.<\/p>\n

For those in Western Australia, where the grand final is being held at Optus Stadium for the first time<\/a>, that means a twilight match beginning at 5.15pm local time.<\/p>\n

The AFL Grand Final has traditionally been played in an afternoon timeslot, but with the showpiece forced to relocate for two consecutive years now due to COVID-19, the league has opted to part ways with tradition.<\/p>\n

Last year's grand final kicked off at 7.30pm (AEDT<\/a>), which was 6.30pm at the Gabba. The 2021 grand final will follow suit.<\/p>\n

However, the later time slot has reportedly raised concerns for audience viewership, with an estimated 10pm finish proving a tough bill for young families.<\/p>\n

"The 5:15pm AWST \/ 7:15pm AEST start time aims to provide fans at the game with the ultimate Grand Final experience by maximising the stadium's offering while taking into consideration the broadcast audience across the country," the AFL's Travis Auld said. \u00a0 <\/p>\n

"The AFL, together with the Seven Network, remain cognisant of finishing the match at a suitable time for younger footy fans and, as a result, landed on a timeslot that is earlier than the usual start time for night matches during the season and last year's Grand Final.<\/p>\n

"Historically, a really special part of Grand Final day is the build-up and anticipation, and we want to ensure we can share the excitement and atmosphere with the millions watching across the nation and around the world."<\/p>\n
