Dragons<\/a> inspiration Tariq Sims<\/a> has opened up on the club's blindsiding call<\/a> to not offer him a contract extension and even allow him to join a rival club with a year to run on his deal.<\/p>\n

While Sims is contracted to St George Illawarra until the end of 2022, Nine's Danny Weidler revealed last week that efforts to have contract talks with the Dragons had taken an unexpected and ugly twist<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Two days after the Dragons' grim 2021 campaign fizzled to a close in a 20-16 defeat to an undermanned Rabbitohs side on the Sunshine Coast<\/a>, Sims has spoken out about how it felt to receive the news.<\/p>\n

The 31-year-old revealed he had had two "short and sharp" meetings with the club to discuss his contract situation.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

He also said that, after receiving the "devastating" news in the first chat that no extension would be offered, he was told in the second one that he was free to find a new home immediately.<\/p>\n

"I was upset at the start … but unfortunately that's football sometimes," Sims told Weidler on Sydney's Nine News.<\/p>\n

"I'm obviously very passionate about my club, I love the Dragons and the Red V has obviously been involved in my family for quite some time."<\/p>\n

After playing 71 games with the Cowboys<\/a> and 27 with the Knights<\/a> between 2011 and 2016, Sims joined the Dragons during the 2016 season.<\/p>\n

The second-rower has since represented NSW<\/a> in State of Origin<\/a> on five occasions and finished this season as stand-in captain, after injury wiped out Ben Hunt<\/a> and Andrew McCullough<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"I still feel like I have two really good years in me and beyond that," Sims said.<\/p>\n
