{"id":119386,"date":"2021-08-25T20:21:20","date_gmt":"2021-08-25T20:21:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/?p=119386"},"modified":"2021-08-25T21:58:48","modified_gmt":"2021-08-25T21:58:48","slug":"australia-lead-paralympics-medal-tally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/?p=119386","title":{"rendered":"Australia lead Paralympics medal tally"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australia&#x27;s <a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/olympics\/tokyo-paralympics-2021-dates-sports-australian-paralympian-team-schedule-opening-ceremony-everything-to-know-ultimate-guide\/0313bf97-18be-4efc-bd24-422e94400b71\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Paralympians\">Paralympians<\/a> have delivered an incredible start to the Tokyo Games, raking in six gold medals, one silver and three bronze to lead the medal count after the first day of competition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/olympics\/paralympics-2021-australia-cyclist-paige-greco-smashes-3000m-record\/91294bfc-95c1-4316-8a8d-1c74bfe6abd6\">Cyclist Paige Greco kicked off the gold rush in the velodrome<\/a> with the very first medal of the Games before compatriot Emily Petricola, who had already nabbed a world record, joined the party.<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"ef19712b-4a41-474b-817d-b39e46aea2a7\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/ef19712b-4a41-474b-817d-b39e46aea2a7\" alt=\"\" data-width=\"4421\" data-height=\"2947\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The swimmers took things a step further with four golds to William Martin, Lakeisha Patterson and best mates Ben Popham and Rowan Crothers who embraced on the pool deck.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I always tell my friends and family at home to not stress at the 50 if I&#x27;m not leading, and I quietly backed myself to reel &#x27;em in but it still feels incredible,&quot; Popham said, still in shock from both the men&#x27;s S8 100m freestyle win and the weight of his gold medal.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I&#x27;m not sure the emotion&#x27;s going to set in for a while.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The winners were full of inspiring messages for young people with disabilities about the transformational power of sport.<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"c4a56fd4-8028-47df-bf83-472e202b5656\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/c4a56fd4-8028-47df-bf83-472e202b5656\" alt=\"\" data-width=\"3000\" data-height=\"1999\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&quot;When I was really young, my disability was so severe and I started with swimming to help my cerebral palsy as that kind of therapy,&quot; Crothers said, after his men&#x27;s S10 50m freestyle win.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Back then, I hated it. I couldn&#x27;t stand it.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;If it wasn&#x27;t for discovering the Paralympics, I never would have even come close to this.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It&#x27;s amazing to come up here and do this now and I&#x27;ve proved that I&#x27;m not just a person with a disability, I&#x27;m also an elite athlete.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"59425530-5ff9-4da7-8182-65b30588c1d6\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/59425530-5ff9-4da7-8182-65b30588c1d6\" alt=\"\" data-width=\"5424\" data-height=\"3600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Petricola, fresh off a world record in qualifying, found her sport at a critical turning point in her life, kicking off a journey that ended with gold in the C4 3000m individual pursuit.<\/p>\n<p>She said &quot;words can&#x27;t describe&quot; how grateful she was to Olympic rowing silver medallist Matt Ryan for suggesting she take up cycling and push for Tokyo and five-time Olympic cyclist Shane Kelly for his help along the way.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;They&#x27;ve changed my life and they&#x27;ve saved my life,&quot; she said, before going on to thank her family and a long list of other supporters.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Like, I was in such a dark place when Matt suggested this.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"865fcbb9-6efd-4b07-9a0a-cedf33e88ec6\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/865fcbb9-6efd-4b07-9a0a-cedf33e88ec6\" alt=\"\" data-width=\"3000\" data-height=\"2000\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Australia&#x27;s love affair with middle distance swimming then carried over from the Olympics to the Paralympics as William Martin and Lakeisha Patterson took out the men&#x27;s and women&#x27;s S9 400m freestyle.<\/p>\n<p>Patterson looked gone with 15m to go but powered home over the top of Hungary&#x27;s Zsofia Konkoly while Martin said he was just following his coach&#x27;s instructions.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;He told me to jump into this race as a bit of an introduction to the meet,&quot; the 20-year-old said, standing side-by-side with bronze medal winning teammate Alexander Tuckfield.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I went alright, I guess I&#x27;ll just do what I&#x27;m told, see how things go, and yeah, here we are.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"8b9fa77b-997e-445a-baab-d732887a8c7e\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/8b9fa77b-997e-445a-baab-d732887a8c7e\" alt=\"\" data-width=\"3923\" data-height=\"2615\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Patterson, who was no stranger to the Paralympic podium before Tokyo, said she was feeling &quot;more fried than a chook from KFC&quot; after the race.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;All I could do was attack it from the start and hold on,&quot; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It was such a good race by everyone. I knew I had it in me. I knew what I was capable of but to be able to finally put all the pieces together was really exciting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It&#x27;s been such a long, hard couple of years.
