{"id":118573,"date":"2021-08-24T05:12:40","date_gmt":"2021-08-24T05:12:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/?p=118573"},"modified":"2021-08-24T06:58:13","modified_gmt":"2021-08-24T06:58:13","slug":"surprising-tactics-behind-crazy-paralympic-sport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/?p=118573","title":{"rendered":"Surprising tactics behind &#039;crazy&#039; Paralympic sport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Its official name is wheelchair rugby, but those who tune in to the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/olympics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Tokyo Paralympics\">Tokyo Paralympics<\/a> might know it better by its nickname &#8211; &#x27;murderball&#x27;.<\/p>\n<p>It&#x27;s a sport where, to the casual observer, anything seems to be fair game, although Australia&#x27;s captain, Ryley Batt, would disagree.<\/p>\n<p>The 32-year-old will share the flag bearing duties for <a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/olympics\/tokyo-paralympics-2021-dates-sports-australian-paralympian-team-schedule-opening-ceremony-everything-to-know-ultimate-guide\/0313bf97-18be-4efc-bd24-422e94400b71\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"tonight&#x27;s opening ceremony\">tonight&#x27;s opening ceremony<\/a> with tennis player Daniela Di Toro, before turning his attention to Australia&#x27;s quest for a third straight gold medal.<\/p>\n<p>That won&#x27;t be an easy feat, with the No.1 ranked Australian side facing stiff competition from the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Japan.<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"bb646585-fe6b-4c11-b060-109a23604790\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/bb646585-fe6b-4c11-b060-109a23604790\" alt=\"Ryley Batt in action for Australia.\" data-width=\"1396\" data-height=\"785\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&quot;We&#x27;ve got a bit of a rivalry going with the Japanese team at the moment, they beat us by one point on home soil in 2018 at our home world championships,&quot; Batt told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.2gb.com\/when-chess-meets-dodge-em-cars-murderball-kicks-off-at-the-paralympics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Radio 2GB&#x27;s Ben Fordham.\">Radio 2GB&#x27;s Ben Fordham.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&quot;We got them back in 2019 on home soil at the World Cup. It&#x27;s a great rivalry, it&#x27;s going to be a cracking game.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Born without legs, Batt needed surgery to separate the webbing in his fingers, and initially rejected the use of a wheelchair, until Paralympian Tom Kennedy visited his school.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Being born with a disability, it was just normal to me,&quot; Batt explained.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I tried to do everything my friends did, and I think that&#x27;s what set me up in life, to look at your abilities, not your disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I despised people in wheelchairs, I didn&#x27;t want to be in a wheelchair. I used a skateboard to get around when I was young, because that&#x27;s what the cool kids did, and I wanted to fit in.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"8f3e7afa-d41c-480c-a0ca-ed35274dd3fb\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/8f3e7afa-d41c-480c-a0ca-ed35274dd3fb\" alt=\"Ryley Batt of Australia and Ayaz Bhuta of Great Britain during the 2015 BT World Wheelchair Rugby Challenge match.\" data-width=\"1396\" data-height=\"785\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But Kennedy, who won a silver medal at the 2000 Games in wheelchair rugby, was instrumental in convincing Batt to try the sport.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I didn&#x27;t want to jump in the wheelchair at the start, but I watched all my able-bodied friends jump in the wheelchairs and bash each other,&quot; he explained.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I sort of wanted to do it, but I couldn&#x27;t overcome that kryptonite of the wheelchair.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;A few weeks rolled on, and I decided to jump in, and absolutely loved it.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;For the first time in my life I felt like I was on a level playing field with my friends.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>While it may look like there&#x27;s no rules, Batt says that&#x27;s far from the truth.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I wish there wasn&#x27;t any!
