The 2021 AFL grand final will almost certainly be played at Perth's Optus Stadium as Melbourne looks to shake a recent outbreak of COVID-19.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Herald Sun reports that the grand final looks destined for Western Australia with the MCG proving unlikely to be able to host a large enough crowd to necessitate the AFL's crown jewel.<\/a><\/p>\n

It comes as Victorian Premier Dan Andrews confirmed Melbourne's metropolitan lockdown would continue at least until August 19.<\/p>\n

It is understood the pre-finals bye is also likely to be scrapped with the preliminary finals and grand final to be played in Perth.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, Western Australia's deputy police commissioner stoked speculation by declaring his state was "well-placed" to host the grand final.<\/p>\n

AFL boss Gillon McLachlan has also confirmed that the Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia governments had all been contacted about hosting the Grand Final.<\/p>\n

McLachlan maintained he was determined to ensure Melbourne did not lose the grand final for a second consecutive season, but conceded he did not want the league's showpiece event to be held in an empty stadium.<\/p>\n

Victoria recorded 25 new local cases of COVID-19 overnight, with 12 of those in isolation while infectious and all linked to existing clusters.<\/p>\n
