Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes<\/a> has urged the AFL to scrap the pre-finals bye for good, saying it is one of two rules that need to be given the boot after this season.<\/p>\n

The AFL is weighing up scrapping the pre-finals bye week as it aims to complete the season without a stoppage amid COVID-19 outbreaks in multiple states across Australia. <\/p>\n

Cornes said the bye as well as the polarising 'stand' on the mark rule, a rule brought in this season, need to be abolished for good from next season onward.<\/p>\n

"There are two things that we never need to see again following this season – one is the stand rule, got to go, don't want to see it again, the other is the pre-finals bye," he told Nine's AFL Sunday Footy Show<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"The advantage that it doesn't give teams that finish in the top four, particularly this year if they don't have home ground advantage, what's the incentive to finish top four? <\/p>\n

\"Richmond<\/p>\n

"So scrap the bye, have it in the lead-up to the grand final, celebrate it, get the teams fresh and ready to go for a big grand final.<\/p>\n

"We don't need a bye before the finals start and I hope we never ever see it again."<\/p>\n

While he called for the pre-finals bye to be scrapped, Cornes advocated for a bye week between the preliminary final weekend and the grand final weekend.<\/p>\n

"I'm ok with one prior to the grand final, similar to what they do in the Super Bowl," he said.<\/p>\n

"You can have all the awards season then, you can get a player who has concussion for instance he may be able to come back and get the best availability for the grand final but we don't need it in the lead-up to the finals."<\/p>\n
