Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka has apologised for a questionable handshake after her loss to fourth-seeded Karolina Pliskova in the semi-final of the National Bank Open final in Montreal.<\/a><\/p>\n

The win was a repeat for the Czech, who defeated Sabalenka in three sets two months ago in their All England Club semi-final.<\/p>\n

"I think I was super solid today," Pliskova said. "Just did everything I was supposed to do to win this match.<\/p>\n

"I'm quite calm. Of course I have some nerves and emotions but I try not to show it that much," she added. "There is a lot of things happening on the court but I think the main thing is just to have a goal and follow that goal."<\/p>\n

Sabalenka finished the match in a frustrated manner, throwing her racquet as she walked up to partake in the obligatory handshake. But when Pliskova put her hand out, the Belarusian barely made contact and walked off.<\/p>\n

She apologised for her behaviour later on Instagram, saying her actions were "not professional".<\/p>\n

"My behaviour today was not professional. I want to apologise for this," she wrote. "@KarolinaPliskova was better today.<\/p>\n

"PS sorry for that handshake \u2026 I just completely lost my mind in that moment."<\/p>\n

"We'll try next time," Sabalenka added, with three flexing bicep emojis.<\/p>\n

Pliskova will now face Camilia Giorgi of Italy, a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 winner over U.S. qualifier Jessica Pegula in the night match. In the Tokyo Olympics, Giorgi beat Pliskova in straight sets in the round of 16.<\/p>\n

Pliskova won the last of her 16 WTA Tour titles in 2020 in Brisbane. Last month, she beat Sabalenka in the Wimbledon semifinals, then lost the final to Ash Barty.<\/p>\n

Giorgi, 71st in the world, had four aces and saved seven of 10 break points. She has two career victories, the last in 2018 at Linz.<\/p>\n

Pegula, the daughter of Buffalo Bills and Sabres owners Kim and Terry Pegula, won her lone WTA Tour title in 2019, beating Giorgi in the Citi Open final in Washington.<\/p>\n
