Tasmanian premier Peter Gutwein has been left fuming by the AFL<\/a>'s response to the Colin Carter report regarding a potential 19th team based in the Apple Isle.<\/p>\n

The long-awaited report from the ex-Geelong president recommended that the state of Tasmania does deserve an AFL and AFLW team, and gave the AFL three options: a 19th license, the relocation of an existing Victorian team, or a Melbourne-based club playing most of its matches in Tasmania.<\/p>\n

After AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan<\/a> suggested that relocation or a joint venture was the "best chance" of a team from Tasmania having success, a furious Gutwein threatened to ban the AFL from the state altogether next season.<\/p>\n

"That immediate response from them I don't think is good enough," Gutwein said.<\/p>\n

"I'm very disappointed with the AFL this morning. This is unacceptable, I've been clear from the outset we need a timeline.<\/p>\n

"We will not finalise those contracts, we will not roll them over with Hawthorn and North Melbourne until we have a starting point from the AFL \u2026 in regards to a new Tasmanian AFL team.<\/p>\n

"Once again they've attempted to kick the can down the road. We don't want to rent our own team, we want our own team.<\/p>\n

"There will be ramifications for that and if it means that we don't [have] AFL content here next year.<\/p>\n

\"UTAS<\/p>\n

"If it means that we use the money that we'd normally use to support those clubs that support our own Tasmanian sport.<\/p>\n

"If we use that money to attract events, other attractions into the state in that period to ensure that we can see the economic benefits."<\/p>\n

McLachlan stated that the Carter report suggested a brand new 19th team in Tasmania would be ranked in the middle of the bottom third of the wealth ladder among AFL teams, but a potential merged team would be positioned in the middle class.<\/p>\n

While the struggling Gold Coast Suns<\/a> have been one of the teams most linked with a Tasmania move, McLachlan said it was "definitive" that the club would not be moved.<\/p>\n

If Tasmania is to gain a license, it requires support from 14 of the AFL's 18 club presidents.<\/p>\n

Carter's report aims for a 19th club to be introduced to the AFL by the 2025 season, but McLachlan stated that there was no timeline for the findings of the review to be implemented.<\/p>\n

"The case can be made for a 19th license, but relocation of an existing team \u2013 if a club is prepared to take that path \u2013 or a joint venture between Tasmania stakeholders and a Victorian team that secures strong support in two markets from the outset would arguably produce a more sustainable outcome and therefore should be considered before a 19th license," he said.<\/p>\n

"We support the view and the Commission supports the view a team representing Tasmania is the right thing to do and ensuring it has the best chance of success is also the right thing to do."<\/p>\n
