Cowboys<\/a> weapon Valentine Holmes<\/a> should in 2022 move from fullback to the centres to vacate the No.1 jumper for Scott Drinkwater, says former Broncos<\/a> captain Darren Lockyer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The arrival of Chad Townsend during the off-season<\/a> will present coach Todd Payten a puzzle.<\/p>\n

The rookie mentor will likely want Holmes, Drinkwater, Townsend and 20-year-old halfback Tom Dearden<\/a> in his starting side, but where he plays them is uncertain.<\/p>\n

Holmes has mainly called fullback home since returning from the NFL for the 2020 NRL season<\/a>, while he's also had brief stints as a winger \u2013 but Lockyer says Payten should undertake another experiment.<\/p>\n

"I think Drinkwater's best position is fullback. I think Val Holmes \u2013 when he goes to that next level, rep level, fullback isn't his best position, but he can definitely play a good role as an NRL fullback," Lockyer said on Wide World of Sports' QLDER<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"If you're bringing Townsend in and (you've already got) Dearden, who's a great kid with a wonderful attitude and I think he's just looking for that little bit of confidence and that'll come with some wins …<\/p>\n

"But I think … if you played Val Holmes maybe in the centres and give him that ability to roam, like Turbo did in the Origin … I think he can do that."<\/p>\n

Legendary Broncos back-rower Sam Thaiday<\/a>, on the contrary, believes Holmes should play on a wing next year and young speedster Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow at fullback.<\/p>\n

Tabuai-Fidow has played the majority of his 25-game NRL career in the centres and on a wing, but he's filled in at fullback when Holmes has been injured.<\/p>\n

Tabuai-Fidow's most recent run at fullback came in Round 18, when the Queensland State of Origin<\/a> livewire recorded a try, two line-breaks, six tackle busts and 271 metres.<\/p>\n

"I think (Holmes is) a little bit clunky (at fullback) still and I thought Hamiso really played some fantastic football there … I'd like them to push and pursue that next year," Thaiday said.<\/p>\n

"We all know that Val is a fantastic winger and even if you just give him the ability to roam \u2013 if they are going to be attacking on a long right edge and he's playing on the left wing, let him get out there and swing in behind and do what he wants."<\/p>\n
