The AFL could scrap the pre-finals bye week if it is able to continue playing games uninterrupted, with the grand final a chance to be brought forward by a week.<\/p>\n

With COVID-19 outbreaks in multiple states throwing the game's fixture into chaos, the AFL grand final<\/a>, currently scheduled for September 25, could be brought forward to September 18.<\/p>\n

If Melbourne's situation does not allow for crowds to be in attendance, the grand final will be moved interstate, with Perth currently the favourite.<\/p>\n

"There is no firm word on this, but if I had to put my house on it right now, it's bye bye to the pre-finals bye," Eddie McGuire told Nine's Footy Classified<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"The AFL's thought at the moment is: let's keep rolling, if things open up let's keep going. <\/p>\n

\"2020<\/p>\n

"If the grand final is in Victoria, they are now looking at bringing the grand final forward that week, so there will be no byes whatsoever. <\/p>\n

"If the grand final goes interstate, then there could be a bye between the preliminary final and the grand final, which would allow everyone to relocate, do all the quarantining that's required."<\/p>\n

McGuire added that a potential pre-grand final bye could allow for the Brownlow Medal to be a standalone weekend event for the AFL.<\/p>\n

"From there that means that there could even be a Sunday Brownlow Medal so there's something on that weekend for the media and everybody to aim towards," he said.<\/p>\n

"They would look at Adelaide [as a grand final venue] if Port Adelaide were there."<\/p>\n
