NRL CEO Andrew Abdo<\/a> says the league is weighing up the proposal of a summer competition, after the idea was raised by Bulldogs GM Phil Gould<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In an effort to help the next generation, Gould yesterday sent a proposal to both Abdo<\/a> and Peter V'landys<\/a> with a view to running a competition through November and December for NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg players who haven't been able to get on the field.<\/p>\n

The New South Wales Rugby League this week cancelled a number of competitions for a second straight season, including the NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg, two of the major pathways for emerging NRL<\/a> talent.<\/p>\n

"Yes [the NRL is looking at the idea seriously] I like the idea," Abdo told 2GB's Wide World of Sports Radio.<\/p>\n

\"Sam<\/p>\n

"If it were up to me, we would be playing rugby league 12 months of the year. I think the opportunity to play in summer is a good one.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

"The biggest challenge that we need to overcome, and we've proven we can do this, is to find a way to be able to get players training and playing safely again, particularly in New South Wales.<\/p>\n

"We're going to watch very closely and obviously support and get behind the vaccine rollout in the community and if we see a situation where community sport is allowed back or we're able to find ways to accelerate people being able to train and play safely again, then I think it's a terrific idea, particularly for younger age groups."<\/p>\n

Gould said even if an official competition can't be organised, the clubs based in western Sydney, such as the Bulldogs, Eels, Tigers and Panthers would be keen to organise a series of stand-alone matches.<\/p>\n
