Former LA Lakers<\/a> point guard Dennis Schroder has left more than $100 million on the table in a failed attempt to gamble on himself amid the NBA's free agency period.<\/p>\n

Schroder, who famously turned down a four-year $114 million dollar contract extension with the Lakers, has today signed a one-year deal worth $8 million with the Boston Celtics.<\/p>\n

The 27-year-old turned down the monster offer by the Lakers back in March. He had joined the 2020 NBA champions during the previous off-season via trade from Oklahoma City to become Los Angeles' starting point guard in a line-up that featured superstars LeBron James<\/a> and Anthony Davis.<\/p>\n

It's understood the decision to turn down the Lakers' offer was based on the assumption he could get a bigger contract during the free agency period that is happening right now in the NBA.<\/p>\n

"He turned down a lucrative extension offer from the Los Angeles Lakers during the regular season, worth north of (USD) $80 million, to pursue a bigger deal this summer," ESPN reporter Tim Bontemps revealed.<\/p>\n

But unfortunately for Schroder, a disastrous outing during LA's early playoffs exit in June, which included a game where he didn't register a single point, dented the point guard's hopes of convincing teams he was worthy of a bigger contract than what the Lakers had previously offered him.<\/p>\n

And in another blow to the German NBA star, it's expected he will be the back-up point guard for the Celtics, with the team expect to start fellow guard Marcus Smart ahead of him.<\/p>\n

Following the announcement Schroder would join the Celtics on a lesser deal, the NBA world was quick to react with the point guard on the unfortunate end of a number of jokes.<\/p>\n

Legendary NFL tight end Shannon Sharpe led the discussion on Twitter by suggesting either Schroder or his manager should be fired for turning down the offer from the Lakers.<\/p>\n
