Carlton co-captain Sam Docherty<\/a> will undergo a round of chemotherapy after a recurrence of testicular cancer.<\/p>\n

Docherty broke the news himself in a lengthy statement on his personal Instagram account, adding that he looked forward to get back for the Blues' pre-season.<\/p>\n

The secondary diagnosis was detected as a part of a routine check-up and the 27-year-old will undergo a 12-week period of chemotherapy. He is expected to make a full recovery.<\/p>\n

Docherty was initially diagnosed with testicular cancer last November.<\/p>\n

"It's hard to know the right way to share this, I think the most important thing to do is to own my story authentically," Docherty said in his statement.<\/p>\n

"In doing so, I hope to allow the narrative to run as it is intended. With purpose and to minimise speculation.<\/p>\n

"Unfortunately life has thrown another curveball my way and my testicular cancer has recurred, sadly meaning that I will need to undergo a round of chemotherapy.<\/p>\n

"It's been a really tough few days processing the news and understanding what the next few months is going to look like for me.<\/p>\n

\"Sam<\/p>\n

"I'm extremely blessed to have such an amazing support team and so many people here to help.<\/p>\n

"While I'm looking forward to getting back out on the track for pre-season, right now my focus is on my health and getting through this time and as such, I would appreciate the respect of my privacy through this difficult time.<\/p>\n

"Lastly, if anything doesn't feel right with your health please go get yourself checked. It could save your life."<\/p>\n

Carlton Head of Football, Brad Lloyd, said the club would offer all the support possible to the 2017 All-Australian defender.<\/p>\n

"We will do everything we possibly can as a footy club to help Sam and his family through this," Lloyd said in a club statement.<\/p>\n

"Right now, Sam's health is the number one priority and he will be given all the support he needs as he undergoes the necessary treatment to allow him to recover fully.<\/p>\n

"Sam is an incredibly resilient person, a strong character and the entire Carlton family is behind him every step of the way."<\/p>\n

Docherty is the second AFL star in the last fortnight to be hit with a testicular cancer scare, after North Melbourne star Ben Cunnington<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Cunnington had his tumour removed in surgery in July and was ruled out indefinitely by the Kangaroos.<\/p>\n
