Great Britain diver Tom Daley has shown incredible class in his response to vile homophobic and transphobic slurs from Russian media during the Tokyo Olympics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The International Olympic Committee<\/a> is investigating the insults made on Russian television.<\/p>\n

Several homophobic attacks were made on Channel Rossiya 1 against diving hero Daley, as well as transphobic onslaughts against New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard.<\/p>\n

Host Anatoly Kuzichev even wore a wig in his mockery of Hubbard, while labelling transgender people "psychopaths" and saying they needed psychiatric treatment.<\/p>\n

Words like "abomination" and "perversion" were used as the television channel slandered LBGTQI+ athletes competing at the Olympics.<\/p>\n

But Daley, the gold medallist in the men's 10m synchronised platform, has been applauded for how he responded.<\/p>\n

"History shows that everything that society is has been dictated from the straight, white, male experience," Daley said.<\/p>\n

"If we could come together and use different points of view, the world would be a better place.<\/p>\n

"There are 10 countries competing at these Olympics where being LGBT is punishable by death.<\/p>\n

"I feel extremely lucky to be representing team Great Britain, to be able to stand on the diving board as myself, with a husband and a son, and not have to worry about any ramifications.<\/p>\n

"There are lots of people who grow up around the world in less fortunate situations.<\/p>\n

"I just hope that seeing out sportspeople will help people to feel like they are less alone, like they are valued, like they can achieve something."<\/p>\n

Daley then gave a moving insight into what his childhood was like.<\/p>\n

"When I was growing up, I always knew I was different," Daley said.<\/p>\n

"I always heard people saying bad things.<\/p>\n

"You never feel as if you can say anything. You swallow yourself up, and you feel like you're never going to be anyone.<\/p>\n

"It takes a lot to come out and speak openly. It can be quite daunting and scary for people, especially in sports where the fanbases might not be as accepting.<\/p>\n

"I didn't realise the impact it would have on people around the world to live as myself. I feel extremely proud of that."<\/p>\n
