Australia's successful Olympic<\/a> swim have returned from Tokyo and while stuck in quarantine, have revealed some unusual methods to keep themselves busy.<\/p>\n

Many of the nation's top swimmers<\/a> are in the Howard Springs quarantine facility in the Northern Territory before they are permitted to travel back to their states due to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Nine's Today<\/em>, Zac Stubblety-Cook and Jack McLoughlin revealed what life is like in quarantine after the highs of Tokyo where the Australian Olympic team equalled their best-ever gold medal haul at the Games<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"It's actually not too bad. It's nice to decompress after a long campaign," Stubblety-Cook said.<\/p>\n

McLoughlin found an ingenious way to kill time while at the quarantine facility with teammate Mack Horton.<\/p>\n

Rather than rest and recover after a gruelling campaign he and Horton decided to make the most of the small amount of space at their disposal by doing a half marathon on their balconies.<\/p>\n

"We've got a little balcony that we can run on – it's about 5-6 metres – just to do a bit of exercise," he said.<\/p>\n

"So Mack Horton and I decided to do a half marathon on it, just because. So we did 22km – it was something like 6,000 shuttle runs and I'm pretty sore this morning but it was fun."<\/p>\n

Today host Karl Stefanovic was horrified.<\/p>\n

"When I'm bored, I drink! You guys run half marathons," he said, laughing.<\/p>\n

Both swimmers were in awe of the support they had received from Australia and were grateful for those back home cheering them on.<\/p>\n

"If I'm honest I kind of tune it out while I was there but it is definitely humbling to see all the support when I got back home," Stubblety-Cook said.<\/p>\n

"Hearing from friends and family or from strangers that you've inspired me to do this or inspired me to do that, it's very special. To have someone like Leisel Jones call my race and say such nice things about me is truly amazing."<\/p>\n

Stubblety-Cook took gold in the 200m breaststroke<\/a> and bronze in the 4x100m medley at Tokyo and has already turned his attention to Paris 2024.<\/p>\n

"I had an opportunity to have a bit of reflection time and what my goals are for the next three years and there's a bit in between with Commonwealth Games and world championships, and I'm keen and excited for the next three years to see what I'm capable of," he said.<\/p>\n

McLoughlin won a silver medal in the 400m freestyle<\/a> at the Games and was ecstatic with the result considering at one point he thought of quitting the sport.<\/p>\n

"Coming into the Games I was just really hoping to be on the podium and to get a silver medal I was just over the moon," he said.<\/p>\n

"I think COVID hit everyone pretty hard last year and in swimming 12 months is a really long time so I was questioning if I could still be at the best in 12 months time.<\/p>\n

"I'm just keen to see all my family and friends and have some time where I can go do stuff. We've been locked away for a couple of months now. Keen to go out and play some golf or just hang with some family to be honest."<\/p>\n
