Eddie McGuire has urged the government to take on more responsibility in stamping out online trolls after Port Adelaide star Aliir Aliir was targeted in a racist attack on social media.<\/a><\/p>\n

Aliir, who took out the Showdown Medal with a starring performance against Adelaide on Saturday<\/a>, was hit with vile social media abuse only moments after the club's win.<\/p>\n

While Port Adelaide put out a statement in support of Aliir condemning the "divisive and hurtful" attack, McGuire says now is the time for proper investigations to take place.<\/p>\n

"This is pure vandalism," McGuire told Nine's Today.<\/em><\/p>\n

"I called the game on Saturday night and Aliir Aliir played one of the most complete defensive games I've ever seen, from start to finish in a game that was decided by a kick.<\/p>\n

\"Aliir<\/p>\n

"He was the most dominant player, he played absolutely beautiful football. It was a work of art in a football sense.<\/p>\n

"For somebody to come out and do it, it was no different to some vandal who comes out and defaces a property for no reason other than their own narcissism and ego.<\/p>\n

"When you find out that post went up that night, deliberately to cause trouble and gain that person's attention… it comes down to the social media platforms to be able to investigate and prosecute these people who do these things."<\/p>\n

In the wake of Sky News Australia copping a YouTube suspension for spreading misinformation surrounding COVID-19<\/a>, McGuire said the government should be taking that same approach with online trolls.<\/p>\n

"The government has got to go hard," he added.<\/p>\n

"We're seeing these things now where they're pulling stories off Sky News.<\/p>\n

"They've got the wherewithal, they've got the political acumen, they've got all those things at their disposal.<\/p>\n

"So maybe they've got to start going after the idiots who do these things as well."<\/p>\n

The abuse to Aliir comes after a week which saw Adelaide Crows star forward Taylor Walker handed a six-match ban<\/a> for a racial slur made during a SANFL contest last month.<\/p>\n

While just last month Indigenous stars Bradley Hill and Matty Parker were also subjected to racist attacks on social media.<\/a><\/p>\n

McGuire isn't the only high-profile figure in the media to call on the government to do more.<\/p>\n

Nine sports reporter and NRL host Erin Molan has spent the past few years urging the government to take a harder stance after she too was the victim of a number of online attacks.<\/a><\/p>\n

"I've been lobbying the government for probably over a year now on this topic," Molan said last year.<\/p>\n

"First of all, this isn't about me. I've been the victim of some of the most horrific trolling and abuse online for the better part of a decade. I am essentially immune to it. I see it for what it is."<\/p>\n
